Indiana University Bloomington Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

Looking for off campus options, other than house parties. I see now there are 18+ options, so that is great to know. Back in the day, I enjoyed lots of 18 to get in, 21 to drink establishments. Not seeing as many today it seems.

Letter said decisions would be rolling and deadline was 4-17.

Any parents in here with recent Kelley grads? What are your kids doing now?

Daughter is wringing her hands over college choice. I told her all her choices are the same. UMD, IU, Purdue, Lehigh, Villanova, PSU. Go where you will feel most welcome and will enjoy your time and you will do well. All the schools have great intern opportunities to create connections for good job opportunities. She isn’t finance or accounting and short of Ivys I don’t think the school matters very much. Opportunities to network for after grad jobs matters but all the schools have that.

She is leaning IU because the DA day gave her insight on things the other schools admit days didn’t. Dorms, dining halls, etc. Spending two full days gives one time to feel like they are living a day at the school. As the days tick by the recency bias fades.

Any advice on how to help?

What is her target major and career (at this point)? How would you describe her personality?

Counselor network reporting some students denied from Kelley DA waitlist yesterday

Marketing concentrating on sports. Personality?

Marketing with a concentration in sports really isn’t a thing at Kelley (focused on Kelley since we are in that thread.)

Personality characteristics, trying to discern where she will fit best. Is she extroverted/introverted? Competitive/not? Intimidated by bro culture? Natural networker/not? etc etc etc.

At IU Kelley, if she majors in marketing and wants to work in sports, she will be competing with students in the Sports Marketing and Management major in the school of Public Health. She will also be competing with quant type majors looking to get into that highly competitive field…think finance, math, data analytics, etc., so I would encourage her to take as many quant heavy classes as she can. Since that tends to be a relatively low paying industry, I might choose the least expensive college option. I would also see if I could get a handle on hiring in the sports industry from each of the schools on her list.

Thought of that too but this past week we contacted some career counselors in the industry connected to the Baltimore Orioles and local sports teams where we live. They don’t deal with college kids but they had some insight. They were less concerned with the exact major and more in what the student does during the summers and off time in school. In fact, some were almost recommending against a specific marketing track.

That with some other research we have come to the realization that undergrad business school is all pretty similar.

Just wanted to ask again, Any parents in here with recent Kelley grads? What are your kids doing now? Marketing majors specifically.

Looking on LinkedIn might be a good idea.

Thank you!! We actually are doing that right now.

We have several minor league and obscure pro sports teams in our area and coincidentally a kid in my daughter’s class parent runs the marketing of one of the teams. He was really helpful. Sent us the name of the career counselor I mentioned above and gave us good advice. Unless it’s a STEM field the degree is only a small piece of the puzzle and the university choice isn’t all that important. At least for the choices my daughter has. They are all good schools.

We are just trying to arm her with as much information as possible. I think she is worrying about minutia.

This was also posted on a few different college 2030 FB pages (including an IU), ones that I follow; my child is currently on the waitlist, didn’t get an email (these were sent on Th), so I’m not sure what the email stated, but what was shared was that these students were on the waitlist and were denied DA to Kelley :(. My student has decided that they are going to IU and will either do so as pre-business or get into Kelley, off the waitlist (hopefully the second).

I was reading the Reddit pages about Pre-business. I liken this to my daughter thinking about Penn State. PSU requires the student to keep a 3.xx GPA to stay in the business school. Each major is a tenth different. Regardless it is a requirement. For IU pre-business look at the grade distribution of one of the accounting classes. It is taught by the same professor and the average percent of students getting an A-/A is about 25%ish.

I don’t like Reddit so I don’t have an account. Here is a link. Not sure if it just links to the main Reddit page or not. One parent said 3 out of 25 made it through pre-business. That is getting Bs or higher. Next year is A-.

In your position, I would definitely recommend if not DA for this fall (off wait list), then you have compiled the info for Plan C; Take the Pre-Business Courseload at IU (which I understand -IS- the same as the Kelley DA students first year and in the same classes as those already admitted??) - and look at your students options as a sophomore or junior start at one of the alt B-Schools that interest them. Make application to both Kelley (Spring) -AND- to other programs as potential transfer during the spring portal (Feb 15th is often the deadline for transfer applications).

If they aren’t DA’d by the start of the school year this fall, they are going to have to create a resume/application for Kelley in the spring anyway - so prepping further for 1-2-3 alt bschools as a transfer in shouldn’t be that much of a burden above that.

If they are accepted to IU Kelley for fall next year - great, if not, they they may have Plan C if B school is still of significant interest and is worth the transfer, if not then the IU non-business major path is still on the table (Econ?)

Where does your D want to end up (location)? These school are all quite similar but will feed to different markets. My S26 chose Kelley because he wanted to land in Chicago.
And yes you can go anywhere from anywhere, but many of your classmates will move as a herd. My D24 is at an east coast LAC and the friend group is all moving away in different directions. Additionally, the easiest internship/job paths will be well-worn to certain locations in certain fields.

Sage advice.

In my experience, business school recruiting can be very regional/local in nature especially for the first job out of college. Best advice is to follow the school’s existing pipelines. Students can always break the mold if they wish. I told my son if he wants to live in Chicago, IU, Iowa, Wisconsin (and obviously in state schools) are excellent choices, UGA less so.

I think culture of each school is also critical. Where does she feel most at home? Does she like the big school environment in college towns or big / small schools in large cities?

Sounds like she has a crisis of opportunity! Good luck!

She is slowly figuring out how lucky she is. Moved her away from looking at the academics and more toward where will she be happy. Miserable outside the classroom will affect the performance inside the classroom.

I was accepted, though I will probably not accept, as I was offered a full ride at a college closer to my home.

Anyone on here have experience with IU Orientation… is it required for in-person or can it be done virtually? Do they hold it over summer or right before classes start?

What dorm is everyone’s student looking at or hoping for?

Daughter is applying JLLC but I told her the honors Briscoe would be nicer assuming she would get assigned that one of the honors dorms. She somehow got the impression the honors dorms are full of anti-social introverts. Some of the kids at DA day scared her off.
