We don’t know to what extent Elizabeth Warren’s asserted Native American ancestry benefited here at U Penn, but “diversity hires” are now an official policy at the school, backed by a $100 million budget:

[The Daily Pennsylvanian - Individual schools make diversity hires in accordance with plan - By ALYSSA BERLIN, JELANI HAYES · February 7, 2013](Individual schools make diversity hires in accordance with plan | The Daily Pennsylvanian)

Often “diversity” is just a code word for an ethnic spoils system.

Member recognition standards vary by tribe. Particularly in the NE, registration is not always the be-all. Complicated.

The only thing surprising about diversity hires is that someone could be surprised as if this hadn’t been going on for a long time.

I"m opposed to ideas of litmus tests and whatnot. My first publications were in communist journals.

Who cares?

I still get to vote. Also, I’m no longer a Marxist, though I really don’t see the harm in it that some people do.

This is actually why I believe strongly that kids really benefit from having exposure to all sorts of biases from their professors and great professors will even assign texts and readings in opposition to their views, just for the sake of exposure. Some will assign papers deliberately designed so that half the class arbitrarily has to argue the opposition point. And this is also why the debate team is a good thing.

There you can find yourself arguing against your own beliefs. Excellent way to test what you really believe.

My S has headed one political affiliation group at his college; he and his across-the-aisle “opponent” have partnered together on various political initiatives. I think it’s great for both of them to be able to see “the other” as people versus stereotypes, and it leaves me feeling very good that his school welcomes all sides of the issue, from libertarian to conservative to liberal to socialist.

I just remembered something funny from the Atlanta Olympics. One of the newscasters was stumbling over how to describe one of the athlete’s race as Black, but in her PC-ness just wouldn’t use the term.

She came out with a garbled, “the uh African American uh swimmer from Ghana…”

probably “the swimmer from Ghana” would have worked. Geez.

^Really! Why was getting “race” right important? They swim for nationalities. Sort of clueless. :/

Well, it would be notable and interesting if a white looking athlete was getting anywhere near the front in the 100m running for men.

So what’s the implication of that, Beliavsky? Should Muslims in the US not be allowed to practice their religion? Should any Muslim from anywhere not be able to immigrate? Should Muslims in the US have fewer civil rights than the rest of us and be monitored more heavily? Maybe they shouldn’t be allowed to be at big public gatherings like a marathon or football game, out of fear – or alerts should be sent to the public at large when they do?
