International Mum wanting help with packing for S heading state side for 4 years!

@Kardinalschnitt : email international admissions and ask whether your daughter could join the international orientation, because she’s lived in (…Japan…Kenya… .) for the past 3…5…9…) years, attending an international/local school, and before that lived in (Ukraine… Chile…) and will need help with cultural shock, academic culture, getting a phone and a bank account, etc, just like international students. Most offices are accommodating. (American U even has an orientation for Expat/3rd culture kids).

@Kardinalschnitt I’m not on FB but hubby is and I’ve asked him to join parents’ group. But I will have to be over his shoulder to get him to ‘talk’ to people he doesn’t know!

Son is going to have to reach out to Reslife and ask if he can have his room mate’s details before time. College releases details by 31st July but on 27th he’s in Portugal and may be off grid. We could not have chosen a worse college for timing. It was the earliest start date of all of them but really a little inconvenience at the start is worth it for the right fit.

Don’t know about registering for classes but he is in London at the end of May for his visa and is hoping to meet up with a member of faculty who is in London too at the time. Hopefully this will ease some worries.

@gearmom I mentioned that there isn’t a brick&mortar shop in the state because lots of people suggest the order & pick-up thing they have.

@MYOS1634 I tried that. No luck. She will meet with adviser and July and there will be a short orientation the day before move-in. Anyway, she has a bank account/card (worldwide US bank) already, and I’ll be there, so all is well. But, yes, the culture shock is going to be REAL. They’re not fully aware, yet, at her school that she has lived in so many countries; they only know she is coming from Europe. I don’t think they are aware of her other citizenships or her childhood. There’s really no opporunity to inform a school with a standard application and no essay – and I haven’t mentioned it (and I know daughter never would)…

I took one look at American and was, like, four more years of the same thing (international school)? No thanks! She needs an adventure! Lewis & Clark and Macalaster also have TCK programs, for anyone interested.

@Whistlingal I have three friends on FB, including my eldest, and use it only to communicate with her and this parent group. It’ll all turn out fine, and later on you’ll wonder what you were so worried about.
