Ipad killing off the laptop?

“I think soon enough here we’ll see a merging of tablets and laptops, i.e. large tablets (the size of a typical laptop screen) with a multitouch display, that can be docked to a traditional keyboard (with optical devices, etc.) where it would charge. In that position, it’s treated like a laptop, but can be detached and used on the go. The challenge so far has been to make a cost-effective display that large, but eventually that won’t be a problem and we’ll have tablet/laptop hybrids as the norm.”

Now only if it was windows 8 compatible.

Ha! Was just testing out the Consumer preview release of Windows 8. Dull color selection and clunky interface for those who aren’t using a tablet/hate the tablet large button interface makes sketchy so far.

Whoever designed the Metro Icons and color selection seems to have something against vibrant colors…

Corporate dull - makes perfect sense.

Look at the Dell Lattitude line or Lenovo for corporate dull.

I may be the world’s biggest iPad fan. I pretty much never leave home without it. I don’t play any games on it. And I do real work. Take all my notes on it in meetings. It is so handy in airports, hotels, and just about anywhere. My iPhone is too small for my old eyes to do much on, even with glasses. I ordered the 3 as soon as I could!

Waverly, ypu might be #2 biggest fan…My Ipad 1 has about 200k miles on it,lol…

I don’t know adogpa, if the 3 took even another month, I’m sure my iPad 1 would have given out. I use it night and day. Should I show up at a family event without it in hand, my young nephew looks for it and brings it to me.

Real work must be a very loosely defined figure of speech. Of course, the unabated success of this forum during working hours is undoubtly helped by people who consider surfing and typing to be … real work.

Seriously, with the possible exception of emailing, there isn’t a single application on the iPad that is work related. Pages? Numbers? Such things are the biggest wastes ever. Apple has a page that shows business applications and underwhelming is the apt description.

Of course, wasting time is a deeply ingrained tradition in the US workplace. Yapping on the phone, surrounding the water cooler, surfing the web, tweeting, keeping your FB current, and countless other activities are part of doing real work!

The success of the iPad is based on its entertaining value. Nothing else! Even it’s educational possibilities are anchored by having fun.

The iPad has email which is useful for work. I often run batch jobs at night and check how they are doing on the iPad in the middle of the night so that I can fix things if need be on my desktop.

Work has merged into home life so you can be working around the clock - work meshes with life and chat.

I have been using Win7 Metro on my Samsung Focus for a year+ and I am quite happy with it. The ‘vibrant’ colors may be hard to come by but Metro does work pretty well.

On a screen you look at for hours on end, vibrant colors would not be a great choice…

Trust me…the colors available in Win 8 make Latitudes and Lenovos look positively vibrant.

Dull blue, brown, orange, green, gray. Couldn’t they have at least offered silver or black?!!
