Sorry Xiggi, my kid has been playing serious music and doing funny things with the music and photographs. There are a bunch of youtubes displaying different ways to use the smule apps.

people take pictures with cameras like this all the time

soccerguy, we are all used to people taking pictures with all sorts of cameras, camcorders and even smartphones, but to me, a guy in a long robe who is standing on the beach and holding a rather large tablet above the head with both hands looks like he is trying to part the waters of the Pacific Ocean (when in fact he is taking pictures of the famous Hawaiian sunsets). :)

Just curious: What is the difference between these smule music apps and those music apps from Apple like Garage Band and Logic?

Off topic (still Apple related though): Does anybody know if Apogee Duet first version works on (new) Macbook Pro preinstalled with Lion? I know I need a Firewire 800-to-400 converter, but how about the driver? (I guess there is no Firewire port on iPad 2, right?)

mcat2 - the website or the youtubes will probably explain this better. Garage band is more of a real instrument, downsized, for the software. I think it includes multiple instruments.

The smule instruments are altered, just make sounds, or have no resemblance to a real instrument. Somebody here downloaded a string instrument, and said it had only three strings. It may be set like a keyboard or synthesizer with pre-programed sounds.

How do you decide how much memory to get? 16, 32, or 64 GB?

Does anyone here own a stylus for the ipad? I’m trying to figure out which stylus feels most like a pen.

I went with 16k, but I have never got anywhere near filling up my other computer’s memory. Not a big movie watcher, so must keep photos, music an documents on my ipad2.

Mainelonghorn…get the maximum memory you can afford. You can never increase the memory on an IPad. That being said…unless you are going to store a lot of movies on your device, you should be fine with 32. I have had mine for almost a year…and I haven’t even come close to using all the memory I have on my 32. But I also don’t have much music on mine…yet…or pictures.

That’s H. I should tell him that it looks strange. H does a lot of strange things. Our kids are used to it.

I’m hoping Santa will bring me an Ipad. I have a question for the Ipad fans here: What are your favorite apps? One that looks good for my purposes is called Noteshelf. It allows you to take notes with your own handwriting, and keep them in virtual notebooks arranged on a shelf. It gets very high ratings at almost all the rating sites I’ve googled.

My main reason for wanting an ipad is so that I have all the major reading devices in one. The ability to download books for the Nook reader as well as Amazon’s Kindle is a real draw. I also want to use the Ipad for writing, and I’d like to keep all my project related documents, notes and research in one very lightweight and portable device (but one whose screen is bigger than 7 inches). Does anyone use their Ipad for this purpose?

You should try your handwriting at a store or borrow one. The notes programs such as Penultimate or Noteshelf are very good in terms of iPad usage. It is important to try because writing feels like painting an icerink with a bucket of paint. Remember that the stylus you need is different and it might not be as easy as expected to try your hand at calligraphy.

Sketches and drawings are easier than extensive writing. The good part is that Noteshelf costs less than two dollars, or less than a latte.

Hint? Love thy moleskine and Mont Blanc. :)

I like the feel of this stylus. I have another stylus, but don’t use it as much. But the fact is that no stylus writes as fine as I’d like. We need more work in this area.

I know a college student who takes his notes on an iPad and uses Goodreader. The professor provides class handouts in pdf form and Goodreader is very good at annotating.

Sounds like the 8080 computer I was hired to program for in the 70s ![]()
I was given 4K of memory for my portion of the code, which was for the editor for a dedicated word processor.

“If they don’t already, I think pads will outsell computers for first time “computer” buyers.”

Our local paper had a tidbit today that on Black Friday iPads outsold all Macs by 40%. Did any stats show up for the non-Apple side?

Thanks, xiggi. I don’t yet own a Monte blanc, but I do own several moleskines, including a watercolor sketch moleskine in landscape format, which I use for plein aire sketching . I love my old school tools, but I’m really looking forward to trying the latest tech tools.

Do you find your Ipad useful for anything? Sounds like it disappoints you terribly.
