Is academic achievement commonly associated with Asian students really based on immigration?

The bottom line is that each of the seven or eight colleges that rejected “Asiandude” accepted hundreds of Asian candidates and hundreds of white candidates (in Berkeley’s case, thousands of each) with worse stats than he had. He wasn’t rejected because some of them also admitted a few URMs with worse stats, too. He was rejected because they didn’t want to accept him.

Apologies to @rhandco

I’m sorry it wasn’t clear that it was a quote, not mine.

There are many many MANY ways our kids are accepted or denied based purely on the numbers.

And there are many many MANY ways our kids can be what seems to be capriciously denied.

And maybe it is unfair, but yes, a male applicant will be more likely to be accepted into a nursing school than a female applicant, with identical scores and quality essays and interviews. And vice versa for engineering.

Is it easier for a white student to be admitted to a HBCU? Some HBCU offer “non-black” scholarships.

"But thanks to holistic admissions our HS kids are completely stressed out not just with academics but with all the ECs, volunteering, part time job etc. It’s madness! And for what? "

That’s a choice. No one is FORCED to go to a top 20 or whatever school. That’s a deliberate, conscious choice to play that game. By no means necessary.

Not everyone who was accepted to a top 20 school played a game. Some students were just doing what they were good at and got rewarded for it. Some had a part-time job because they needed money.

I agree 100% “it’s a game”.

That is, if you want to get a “holistic college education”, you need to subject yourself to a “holistic college admissions evaluation process”.

@Rancho What’s the point of your thread dragging seriously? It’s no question I think holistic admission is the stupidest thing ever invented. All these schools could easily admit by talent areas and achieve the “well-rounded” class that they claim to seek, but they don’t. Instead they make these kids run themselves ragged doing everything just so they aren’t dominated by one demographic group. Why not just come right out and set a quota by race and be done with it - admit each group in proportion to their respective distribution in the general population, strictly by merit. Relying on essays is just dumb. There is no way to authenticate any information in the essays, or know who’s had their essays written by professionals.

Is that really what you want to do? Asian representation will drop like a stone.

Fine by me. Peg the % to the general population. As long as they admit strictly by merit within each group, just get rid of the stupid HA.

Why not apply to the many fine colleges which admit based on a formula?

Sounds like someone is angry because she or he thinks s/he was rejected because of race

Georgia tech is a terrific school. I know a young man who went there because they didn’t require essays and LORs. he just refused to do all the extras to apply to MIT or other colleges looking for a holistic criteria.

It’s worth saying that colleges want kids to continue doing the ECs they were doing that made them appealing applicants, too. They want good athletic teams, debaters, a vibrant outdoor club, top music groups, kids who will do community service/outreach in the college community, all those things.

One can argue that these things are dumb but they aren’t going away anytime soon at most top schools and the “game” doesn’t end with acceptance at one.

Maybe it’s time to revive my old idea, to start a Super-Stat University. (See http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/509446-modest-proposal-the-super-stat-p1.html.) It seems there would be a demand for it. Perhaps I should set up a Kickstarter.

Absolutely you should, but the way to do it is to divide your new creation into two “colleges”. One would have “Super-Stat” admissions and the other, old-fashioned discriminatory holistic admissions. That would make for a wealth of research data that could be discussed forever…

I’d need a third college, one that used holistic criteria but pre-edited applications to make them race-blind.

Hunt University is born. Three colleges:

  1. Factum College -- the numbers-based one
  2. Vita College -- the holistic one
  3. Ambo College -- the mix

I think maybe “Justice College” for the third one, since Justice is blind. It would make a cool logo.

ahhh – if you stuck with the latin theme, that would be Justitia or Iustitia

Yeah, but what’s your outcome measure of success? $ made - straight out, 10 years hence? PhD production? Satisfaction with experience? % who get placed in very specific “prestige” jobs?
