Because people who know how HR block works, know that the janitor who was cleaning that floor stain 10 minutes ago goes and changes into a suit and ends up being your “accountant” and gets paid 10-12 dollars an hour.

Many H&R Block clients use H&R Block because they’re idiots or lazy. The average 1040 filer has few issues and should be able to do their own taxes. I heard a lot of ads from H&R Block this spring about doing 1040EZ’s for something like 40 dollars. If your job is doing 1040EZ’s for other people, you are NOT an accountant. You are a tax preparer and there is nothing special about doing what any n00b can do on his own. I had to use a 1040A when I worked and managed to fill it out just fine on my own without the benefit of any schooling or training whatsoever. There’s nothing shameful or dishonorable about working at H&R Block, but it’s not exactly professional in most cases. I’m sure they do some more complicated work, but their bread and butter isn’t.

The reason I mentioned it is that my frined worked for them during his college years, and this experience helped him to get into MS in Taxation program. He also recommended me to go there this year. I don’t know whether should I go, or should just study at college and keep my GPA high. They also require a person to pass a training, which equals to 9 college credits. I’m afraid that this is going to be a lot for me, while I go to college and work part time. Is it really that good or bad, in terms of career opportunities in the future??? He also told me that the tax class which all accounting majors have to take is nothing compared to this tax training that a person gets there.

I took the Jackson Hewitt online tax course and it really wasn’t that difficult or time consuming. I am currently taking 17 credit hours and working 40 hours a week while helping take care of a baby and I still manage to sleep 7-8 hours most nights. I actually recommend pushing yourself a bit because it will teach you time management skills and help build character.

I found a different/better job so I didn’t work for them but the course I took was very useful and a terrific investment as I learned a ton about how to save money with taxes.
