Is anyone watching the U.S. Open?

If the tourney was broadcast in black/white then we would say what a great course.
In HD, the fairways look like my municipal course in the dog days of summer.
How about that sad looking douglas fir withering on the fairway…
With the 3 golf greats sitting next to him, why does JoeB have to hog the mic or talk at all?

I just tuned in for the first time and I thought for a moment I was watching The British Open.

I didn’t realize that Washington is in drought, too.

Yeah, we are going for a record.
I think the last 16 months or so, have been the driest ever.
Snowpack is zero % of normal, and fire season last year was bad, this year may be worse.

We are not golfers. In fact, we kind of hate it. We have been watching it, though. At first it was just to check in because it was local and I have clients who are attending but it became kind of compelling. As a non-golfer I love that the course is challenging and unpredictable. It makes it more of an actual sport in my mind that they have to really work at it and focus.

It can’t be all luck because, on the whole, the guys who are at the top are guys who one might expect to be at the top or who have been there before. It looks physically challenging and if you’re stuck in your ways it would be mentally tough. They can’t just play against themselves on autopilot on this course. I heard a famous retired golfer (forget if it was Palmer or Tom Watson or somebody else) say that it isn’t the job of the course to suit the golfer - the golfer needs to be able to adjust his game to suit the course.

I have also seen a lot of guys drive the ball into the rough or a bunker. For all the pissing and whining about the greens, if your ball goes into the rough (or the concession bar) off the tee you have nobody to blame but yourself.

After mocking us soundly, DS actually sat and watched a couple holes while he had lunch yesterday. He saw some epic plays. He feels that all they need are a few good mud pits and land sharks to make it like Wipeout Chambers Bay.

I have no problem with the look of the course: it looks a lot like a British Open. But I do have a problem with the viewing by spectators who seem to be largely relegated to bleachers a half light year from the green or many yards from the tees or fairways. That’s wrong! You pay a ton of money to attend a tournament and you should be allowed to be close to the players. The first major tournament I saw was the 1972 PGA at Oakland Hills (almost in my backyard) and people gathered, as they do at most tournaments, right up to the greens and tees. In fact, in those days people didn’t go to the practice rounds so us kids were able to walk around with the big stars. I mean walk around, like Johnny Miller putting his arm on our shoulders and playing with balls hit into the deep rough and Lee Trevino making jokes and even showing a trick shot. Nicklaus wasn’t particularly friendly but he didn’t mind you walking with him. (The single best line came from Chi Chi Rodriguez, who was tiny. A ball came over a hill in twilight and Chi Chi came trotting after it with a tiny bag with like 4 clubs in it. The ball was maybe 20 yards behind a big tree and some guy came up and asked if he’d play a slice around it and without a pause Chi Chi dropped his bag, picked up some long club and stepped up with no practice swing said, “Nah, I prefer the hookers” and whacked it right over the tree.) Fuzzy Zoeller accused me of stealing his ball (and was non-stop jokes). It was great. The greens were like actual glass and were so fast they had to let them grow longer during the week. Gary Player won. He was a very serious guy, friendly in a “hi” kind of way to us but no conversation. A few of the older players weren’t nice.

At every tournament, including majors, I’ve never seen such lousy locations for spectators.

Building to a very exciting finish!

Wow! Impressive, especially after 17.

Hook 'em, Horns!!!

That was unexpected, good for Jordan S.
Poor Wayne Gretzky, thought his SIL was going to win.

I feel sick for Dustin Johnson. In shock and oh my

Happy that Jordan won…sorry for Dustin. But very glad there is not a playoff tomorrow…I’ve been on the couch for four days and need to get something done.

Add my H to the list of those who dislike Fox’s coverage- he didn’t watch very much of it because of this. I also could hear some very bad commentary on occasion.

I think Fox is inexperienced in the camera angles and announcing, and not as quick with the graphics, but CBS has been doing golf for years and sometimes at the same courses (Augusta) year after year. Fox used to suck at football too, but got better over the years.

I didn’t like the course because of how far away they kept everyone, and not one tree! I can’t imagine how hot it was to just sit in those stands for hours and hours. I’ve been to a few golf tourneys and like to walk around, not stay in one place, sit under a tree on a par 3. I would not have liked this course for watching.

The weather is not baking hot here, there is no humidity and there is a gentle breeze and cooling off the water. I am eager to hear tomorrow from all the people who attended. I will report back with their impressions.

I have never watched golf before so have no comparison for the broadcast. I did feel like the guys at the desk were sort of bumbling and I wasn’t a fan of the eye candy girl with the teased hair at the post round interview. I also wished that they’d spent more time going over the hole and diagramming the approach ahead of the tee shots.

We were rooting for Spieth and his local caddy so were very excited. I shocked myself letting out several whoops as they went down the stretch neck and neck.

We felt that it was really thrilling that anything could happen right up until the finish - there were no givens on this course.
