I can testify to the overnights being very useful. I was actually one of (I don’t know if she hosted more) high school students that Fiona hosted. I really felt like I got a good feel for the campus and what it was all about. It was definitely a good experience. I intended to apply ED to mudd before my visit, but after the visit I was 100% sure that I was going to apply ED.

Congrats to COson! When he visits overnight, his host(s) will probably just invite him along on whatever they’re doing – in which case he might take in anything from AE to video games to dorm meetings or whatever else happens to be going on that day/night. My son and his roomie host as a tag team; when one of them needs to go somewhere or do something that would bore a prefrosh, the other whisks him off for video games or something. They try to pair hosts with prefrosh by major selection, so COson’s host will probably know some faculty to introduce him to and be able to answer some questions or point out some things of interest. I’d advise CO_son to ask when he gets there.

As it turns out, 4/1 is the least typical day to visit campus this year because of sophomore room draw in the evening.

Oh well. It was a 4/1-4/2 visit or none at all. We had to do it during spring break due to April schedule constraints, and the Admissions office couldn’t accomodate visitors earlier in the week. Hopefully things will be calmer on Friday.
