IS it easy to get into Rice?

sorry, I meant enroll… but your numbers prove the point too. 3 times the number apply to Harvard, a comparable amount are admitted, and Rice anticipates more attrition than Harvard, which attrition rate is steadily decreasing

@Oldcard: what is attrition rate?

Attrition rate = yield basically

While we’re glad you’re interested in Rice, it may help to use CC as a secondary source in your college search process. While there are people like Antarius who graciously give of their time to answer people’s questions, this is not the place to go to get answers for basic things.

Seriously, go to Rice’s website and look around. That’s what I did. I probably spent at least an entire day’s worth of time on the site looking up info. If you still have questions after reading through it, either send an email to the school/department/office, or you can come here seeking clarification. We don’t mind answering questions as long as there is a good reason for the question. Asking if it’s easy to get into Rice is something that can be answered by looking at their admissions statistics. However, if you wanted to know specifically what some of us have done to get into Rice, then ask for that.

Can you enumerate these top schools you’re saying?

Go to the top of this college confidential page and click “CC Top Universities”, and you will see the list that I am referring to.

California Institute of Technology
Carnegie Mellon University
Duke University
Emory University
Georgetown University
Johns Hopkins University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Northwestern University
Rice University
Stanford University
University of California - Berkeley
University of California - Los Angeles
University of Chicago
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
University of Notre Dame
University of Virginia
Vanderbilt University
Washington University - St. Louis

Do you think all these unis have similar academic standard? Just curious.

I believe slik nik was just stating that none of the universities listed above are EASY to get into, not that they have equal academic standards. They all have high standards when compared to most other US universities (excepting top LACs and the Ivies).

I imagine the public schools on that list are extremely hard to get into from out of state, and possibly from in-state as well depending on legislation.

reid2575, I’m just curious.

If you’re from Texas, would it be harder for you to get into Rice than UC Berkeley?

It’s probably a bit harder to get into UCB than Rice, just based on pure admit rates. It also depends on what school at Cal you’re applying to (CoEngineering being harder to get into than L&S, for example).

Statistically speaking, it would be harder to get into UCB.

UCB is a public school and explicitly states that “Preference is given to California residents in the selection process.” UCB admitted only 17.6% of non-residents this year.

Rice’s admit rate of Texas applicants is probably somewhere around 25-30%, but this will likely decrease as Rice becomes a more nationally-recognized university. This is not to say that Rice has had to “settle” for Texans, merely that due to Leebron’s plan to increase Rice’s reputation/popularity, more out-of-staters will be accepted, leading to a decrease in accepted Texans. It’s an inverse relationship. :)

And as schee410 said, it does depend on the program, etc. A girl who went to my H.S. was rejected from Rice’s Achitecture program and accepted to Berkeley’s (where she now goes). But Architecture and Shepherd are laws unto themselves.

No, it is not easy to get into Rice.

First off, the reason we come here to CC is to get info not readily available on the school’s website. Numbers are facts, but experience speaks volumes.

As someone from the south, where many students hope to go/apply to/get accepted to Rice, I can say that Rice is a very difficult school to get into. In fact, many GCs discourage students from applying, saying, “not even our valedictorians can get in there”.

But my advice to anyone who is interested in attending Rice is to say, Apply. Of course, I wouldn’t ONLY apply there. But put it as one of your reaches. If you get in, great. If you don’t, you will have another choice.

We actually had quite a few boys accepted from our high school here in Louisiana, but only one is going to Rice. Others chose schools with better financial offers, more “prestigious”, or even schools they just really wanted to go to, but applied to Rice as an outside shot. Their declines maybe gave someone on the waitlist a shot, or were just figured into the stats of the admissions people at Rice.

Good luck to you on your college search, and hope you get to be an Owl!

Montegut, your reply was really the best of all.

Experienced CC posters many get frustrated with generic questions but sometimes when you are already reading posts on these boards, its just tempting to ask such questions, no harm in that.

I appreciate that people take so much time and patience in replying.
