Is it necessary for boys to wear Tuxedos to proms?

I still have nightmares over what I wore to my junior prom 30+ years ago. I don’t want to talk about it…

Call in a favor from a neighbor or friend that may just have a black jacket for work that your son can borrow. I’m sure they would love to help - especially if its a prom.

It is also customary that the boy to buy a corsage for his “date”. Not sure at this point if you’ll be able to gt one. If you can, go with miniature white roses - and just get the ribbon to match the girls dress. The miniature white roses don’t wilt throughout the night.

I have no one that I can borrow from unfortunately. My son is thin (36R), not an easy size. Although, we do have the corsage situation under control. I called the local florist yesterday and he’ll have something tomorrow.

Still hoping to miraculously find a jacket. I plan on hitting TJ Max, Daffy’s and Filene’s after work.

Can you call a few places before wasting time and driving all around town. You know your sons size - maybe a nice sales clerk would be willing to help you out.

Is there anyone from this school that you could ask? The guys at D’s school wear suits or at least a sport coat , no tuxes.

Well after checking out 5 thrift shops, 2 FIlene’s, a Benetton’s, a TJ Max and a Daffy’s, I bought a black jacket (at Filene’s). I line in NYC, and the thrift shops are all within a couple of blocks of my office and the other stores are within a few blocks of each other so if didn’t involved massive driving around, just a few extra blocks to walk on the way home from work. I just wanted to get it overwith.

The jacket is quite nice so hopefully they’ll be other opportunities to use it.

Definitely will be other times a black jacket will come in handy–funerals, for example.

A guy I know rented a chicken costume to wear to prom. He was also voted prom king. The prom queen looked uncomfortable dancing with him.

Is it impossible to find a suit in his size? If you go to a few department stores and maybe an outlet mall, you can typically find a suit even in an odd size and most places are willing to do immediate alterations. As an earlier poster said, most guys wear tuxes with colored vests, and often the few guys wearing suits stand out. However, a suit is still considered formal attire. If you’re buying pants, a vest, and a jacket separately, they will all be made of slightly different material and be slightly different shades of black; while you may think it looks ok from a distance, it will be really obvious and not formal enough.

I looked at suits when I went back out for the jacket. I was too pressed for time between work and everything else. In all honesty, it looks pretty good even if it is 3 separates. The fabrics are quite similar and the fit is perfect.

In any case, I think it’s better than a zoot or chicken suit, and hopefully there aren’t any funerals in his future (which isn’t even funny, a friend of his passed away a couple of months ago unexpectantly and he did attend the funeral, it was heart-wrenching).

Really…really? That’s just sad. (and I don’t mean the not-having-a-tux part.)

Dad’0’2–that junior prom outfit you have nightmares over–did it involve the color powder blue, and/or ruffles?

Both of my brothers got married in the 70’s (one in '78 & one in '79). The men wore powder blue tuxes(w/ ruffled shirts). When I was planning my wedding my Dad told me he would agree to anything as long as he didn’t have to wear a blue tux.

The guys wore gray morning coats. No ruffles.

I know this is off-topic but couldn’t pass it up.

This really is a shame because, just like a wedding, the focal point is the girl/bride. As long as the boy is not wearing a chicken costume–wait, someone’s done that…

In looking over the 12 couples that went to the prom together in my D’s group, while just now looking over the photos taken of the group, I noticed one guy had on a dark suit on with a tie matching the girl’s dress. I hadn’t noticed he only had a suit on before. Just goes to show you…it’s the girl your eye is drawn to!

Our son chose to wear a black suit (purchased the previous year for a funeral) to his senior prom because, tall and thin as he was, the suit fit him much better than the rental tux that had been “altered” for him junior year.

We did get a more formal tie. He looked darn good.

handemom - how did your son look and how was the prom??

I thought he looked dapper!

This reminds me of the one and only run-in with my soon to be MIL. She wanted me to wear a maroon colored tux to match the bridesmaids dresses. I said NO, the Tux will be black and the shirt will be white (And no ruffles). There was some initial and intensive angst on her part, but I stuck to my guns and she and I have never had a problem since.

Her other SIL wore a Canary Yellow Tux to match the bridesmaids dresses. (w/ Black fringed ruffled shirt) To say it was stupid looking beyond belief would be an understatement! And years later it cost them a pretty penny to get a few of their wedding pics redone to made it appear he wore a white Tux.

Ha!

^You can do that???

They had a photographer airbrush the photos. This was before Photoshop.
