<p>Nah, he is not unlucky. He sucks at interviews and possibly also programming. He says some of the “programmers” he works with are English majors. Go figure :)</p>

<p>Does it really matter what their majors were in college if they can program? It seems to me that a firm would be giving its employees the salary they deserve contingent upon their programming ability rather than college major (you mentioned that your friend may not be making enough because he didn’t have a “programming” degree).</p>
<p>if a company hires English majors to do programming it’s probably because they can’t afford computer science majors.</p>

<p>Not in your state (NY). Fresh out of college with a BA they were getting 36k in '05. Granted NY does have an increased cost of living.</p>
