At Penn I hear people talking about drinking exactly like talking about studying.

For example, I’ve heard people say stuff like, “Im going to study so hard!” in exactly the same way they treat drinking…

At Cornell my senior year, I lived in the Scholar Living Unit. I don’t know how it is now, but at the time it was just a checkbox on the housing application.

Trust me, it was no more scholarly than any other residence hall floor. For example, we immediately started calling ourselves the Scholar Living Unit Tenants. And one fine day, I came home to the floor and was told not to flush a certain men’s room toilet. Sure enough, I went into the men’s room…and the toilet contained something which the proud creator wanted to show off to all and sundry, for its size.

I do understand the question. While at a debate tournament representing Cornell, I was asked if Cornellians all wore suits and ties (like I was wearing) and listened to classical music. Ummm…no. If there was any common Cornell dress, it was blue jeans and an umbrella (and I believe the latter at least is always in style there).

Oh yes, and Mao jackets/caps (complete with red stars) and Che Guevara insignia…by people who knew very well what those guys did and considered them heroes. (Even that mainly on and near the Arts Quad, mind you.)

As for the music? What you’d expect to hear anywhere else.

PS: One of the most fun things about Cornell is the food. (That said, the same may be true of Bucknell…from what I can tell having visited there.)

It didn’t seem to me that this got enough emphasis in this thread - Harvard is a lottery for everyone. Perfect grades, ACT/SAT scores and extracurriculars merely buy you a ticket. There are kids who’ve practically been coached by their parents all their lives so that they would have the best possible shot at being accepted, and they still don’t make it. There simply aren’t enough seats.
