UC only look at grades in 10th and 11th years. You only have 1 more year to bring up your GPA. I would say UCR is reach for mechanical ENG for you. Start looking into other options such as UCM, non-impacted CSUs. Or other less popular ENG options.

A lot of students start out in high school with some bumps in the road. What will be important is to get better grades the rest of high school. And if you had some personal stuff going on in 9th and 10th grade which might have contributed to your academic challenges, there’s a spot on the Common App where you can explain some of that.
You should start listening to the “Your College Bound Kid” podcast. It’s geared towards students, parents, and counselors, but it’s got a treasure trove of info that they talk about each week…info that your high school’s counselor might not think to tell you about. They also have a really great website with a lot of helpful information.
