UriA702: Many (if not most) engineering schools used to encourage their seniors to take the EIT exam to keep open the option of getting a PE license in the future (I don’t know if this is still true today). It made sense to take this exam while still in school, with the fundamentals that made up the test still fresh in mind. In my school’s case, there were a number of EIT study sessions offered ahead of time to help students prepare. Most everybody in my class took the test, and as far as I know everybody in my discipline passed. However, it is still the case that very few people actually do go for the PE. You are correct, PE licensure requires not just that you pass a test but that you submit a satisfactory work history and recommendations from inside your field.
