S lives in Arlington VA. He specifically was interested in getting a place that included covered parking, preferably heated and he has done so. He’s probably paying a higher rental rate, but he’s happy, so it works. He has a one bedroom place with the gated heated parking place for around $2k/mo. His place is about 1-2 blocks from metro, so he doesn’t HAVE to have a car, but it really reduces his commute time. It is about double or more when he takes metro + bus, since the metro doesn’t go very near his workplace.
When I was in college, some students paid families with houses just offf campus to park in their driveway or parking pads.
Honestly, I love in the woods in New England. There is no public transportation near me. So I own a car…or two.
But if I lived in a major metro area with excellent public transport like Boston or NYC, I would have to think twice about this. One of the perks of living there is not needing a car…one reason why those areas are appealing to me for retirement!
