Is it worth it to go in 150k student loan for NYU communciation major?

I don’t care what the name is (and I say that as a parent of an NYU alum), I can’t see how any undergrad degree is worth that much in loans. I am hoping that looking at what that actually means in terms of repayments helps the student understand how financially burdensome, if not outright crippling, the implications of that loan amount are compared to what they might expect to earn. (And trust me - again as the parent of an NYU alum, lol - the name on the degree is not an automatic guarantee of high earnings!)

Crippling is the right word when describing this level of debt with a likely low to average paying job/career. $150K debt will impact one’s credit rating, their borrowing ability for a car loan or mortgage, even the type of job one can take. For example, some law enforcement and some law/legal adjacent/courthouse jobs, (which may include communication type jobs) won’t hire people with large debt because they are relatively more at risk for being blackmail/bribery targets. And not to pile on, but having large amounts of debt may limit who will even date/consider marrying the debt holder. My kids in their early twenties and their friends talk about this.

Just another vote for no. College is supposed to increase your options. As others are explaining, this level of debt takes lots of options away.

And at least in the US, there is almost always a nearly-equally good option, sometimes in fact better when you really get into the details, that will cost less.
