If you can’t afford to go OOS colleges, then you are out of luck.
Using 75% of parents’ income for OOS college will be very crippling. Seems like the IS colleges are realistic and only possible choices for you, since I doubt UO will give much aid to OOS kids, and I don’t think whatever scholarship they give you will be enough(one of reason I didn’t apply since I am a foreign student)
You have three choices.
Pick whichever IS college you have been accepted, and just go.
Pick IS college for now, then try for transfer to private university that offers transfer financial aid. It’s not easy, but when you transfer, your college records are much more important than high school. For example, my sister took GED because she wanted to go to college 1 year earlier(otherwise she would have been too older than her peers), went to OSU, then succeeded in trasferring to Vanderbilt with full ride. Vanderbilt guarantees 100% need to transfer domestics.
I know, this is a hard feat to accomplish, but if you are really determined, it’s worth shot.
Take a gap year, build some experience or do something valuable, then re-apply. Re-take ACT if you feel you need to(What ACT do you have?). Apply to several private universities and OOS colleges with good amount of merit scholarship.
Yeah, but a college degree from flagship State U is a COMMODITY. If u were investing in gold, why would u pay twice as much per gram from vendor A as you would from vender B?
OP, could you live with your Mom in California? The California Community College System is quite good and dirt cheap [if you qualify for California Tuition (~$46/credit)]. There is even the possibility that you could qualify for free bus passes if you meet certain “income” (mom or dad?) threshold. California Community Colleges have clear pathways to UCs/CSUs. Community Colleges in California have over 2 million students and a lot of those students have very good GPA and SAT/ACT scores.
Is it possible for you to start taking driving lessons now and get your license by the end of the summer?
Have you investigated the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program?
In it, you would be charged in-state rates plus 50% at participating schools. Not all schools participate and I know that U Oregon does not (with a limited Clark Honors exception). http://wue.wiche.edu/search1.jsp
However try not to be too attached to the label of ‘sports’ marketing. marketing is marketing. Having such a specific niche on your diploma could exclude you from other areas. Those hiring in the marketing fields don’t really care what your degree is called as long as you fully understand and can apply the principles.
If you’re not attached to ‘sports’ marketing being your specific major, you would have many more very affordable, not in Idaho schools to choose from, including several in California and Oregon.
If you can think about other affiliated majors within the Marketing/Business arena, you should still be able to apply for and qualify for any sport-related internships and jobs that you’re looking for.
Just wanted to update you guys! I decided to enroll at Wofford College in South Carolina where I received over $32,000 in scholarships/aid a year. I didn’t want to pay $50,000 to go to the University of Oregon so during my late college search I decided to apply to Washington State University (accepted, $11,000/per year scholarship) and Wofford College (accepted, $22,000 merit and $10,000 grant.) I was denied USC, UCLA, and waitlisted at UCSB so none of those schools were an option. I am happy that I know where I am finally going now, thanks for all your guys’ help.
Wow, congratulations! That’s a GREAT college! How did you find it?
After all that soul searching, it’s good to hear back; and with such excellent news!
@MYOS1634 My grandfather used to work for Wofford College as an announcer at their football games and I realized that if I want to get away from the state of Idaho it would be a better for me to apply to private colleges, so after realizing that my chances of getting into USC are slim I decided to apply to Wofford College and just hoped for some merit and financial aid. Wofford College is a lot smaller than I would like so I may transfer if I do not like it, possibly to Wake Forest (has great financial aid for transfer students) and is only a few hours up north from where Wofford and some of my family are at.
Update again! Just received news that I am a Bonner Scholar recipient at Wofford College so all my expenses at Wofford are paid for! *except books. This is honestly crazy how I was about to pay hundreds of thousands to go to the University of Oregon but I expanded my college search and now I will be going to Wofford College for nearly free!
My favorite Wofford College story is the story of John Pilley, a now-retired psychology professor who [trained his Border Collie Chaser to recognize over 1,000 unique words](Smart dog: Border collie learns language, grammar), including basic strings of commands (“take ball to Frisbee”). He wrote a book, and there are little snippets of the Spartanburg and Wofford lifestyle in it. It seems like a really chill, close-knit small city and campus.
Was the grant need based? My son applied to Wofford and the said we would hear back late January. We don’t qualify for need base but we are looking for a better offer than a backup school came in with.
