Is my son missing something?

With regards to online registration, I know for a fact that self registration online for courses is required at the very least for those in SPA. As for how the other schools treat the registration process, it could be, as you said, different depending on the school. However, I am interested in knowing who it was that said that the advisor determined the schedule.

Bokaj- In the New student orientation folder we received, it says “in mid-May your advisor will send a link that provides information about registering for classes” and “you must access the online Freshman Guide…and follow the instructions to complete the fall class registration form” and that’s what happened. We were also told how it works at accepted students day. (but I can’t remember by whom) I know I had also previously read it somewhere in a College Confidential AU thread, because I remember that I wasn’t surprised that it’s actually done by the advisor the first time. In any case, if you have classes listed under Course Registration / Student Snapshot, I’d say that you are all set. If there are any other SPA students/parents reading this, maybe they could comment on the process that they followed, but I feel comfortable that my D did what she needed to do. And yes, boysx3, she was happy with her schedule too - no drama at all. Whew!

My son is an SPA student. He did this all himself, the process he followed was the one in the web-site. There was a list of “things to do” prior to orientation (like the ID picute, setting up e-mail). He followed those instructions, picking things he was interested in, then picking what classes he wanted to take fall semester. He got a schedule on line which looked fine to him, but then he got a phone call from his advisor who reviewed his schedule and had some reccommendations for changes. The advisor changed things right while they were on the phone. My son now has his fall schedule set. We questioned how “set” it was without yet taking the placement tests. Because of his AP’s from last year, and grades from this year, the advisor felt like placing out of Math and English would probably happen. If, by chance, that didn’t happen, my son could just pick up those classes in the spring. I figured the schedule wouldn’t really be delt with until orientation, but I was wrong. It was a very easy process he did himself. We are still meeting with the advisor at orientation, but it’s my understanding his schedule is set.

i took 2 placement tests online last week: Spanish( several stays in Spain) and French(i’m french) and because i scored high they don’t know where i belong and the advisor said she will get back to me soon with the schedule! i’m waiting…

i received the schedule… and it’s not what i expected and asked for:( i’m disappointed and i sent an email to my advisor with requests and explanations, i hope she will get back to me soon otherwise i will meet her at orientation and try to discuss my schedule and make some changes!!!

I got my schedule… It’s weird but fine. My elementary arabic class is 8:10pm to 9:55pm

my elementary italian class is 8:10 pm to 9:55 pm!! ^same as you!

D is in CAS and her advisor has told her to pick courses, she is not locked in at all and likely won’t take them all anyhow. Her advisor will put together her classes and if they need some switching, they’ll talk about it. But I have to say that its a weird way to chose classes.

Yeh, I was suprised myself to find out that not all the schools treated it the same way. Personally, I favor the way SPA does it (student registers for his/her own classes). I just see too many problems arising with the way some of the other schools are doing it (advisor creating the initial schedule).

I don’t know I have mixed feelings about it. It seems very confusing, but on the other hand it’s only their 1st semester-- It may end up easier to have an advisor do it until they learn the ropes, they have 4 years to get in the courses they need, and at least, they have an early opportunity to meet their advisors.

I’m in SIS and I like the way it worked out. I requested classes in the freshman guide and my advisor gave me the majority of the classes I wanted, I didn’t have to actually deal with registering.

my advisor gave me italian when i requested french or spanish. she said she made a mistake and will make the change soon. she also said that all classes are closed now and more changes will be unavailable! finally i think i’ll be fine with my schedule! now i need to know where and when i’ll have a job? and how it’ll fit my weird schedule?

D (CAS) got a notice today that she had come off the waitlist for one course and has till 11 AM tomorrow to accept or decline. Since it was actually her second choice, and she is #1 on the waitlist for her first choice, she emailed her advisor about whether she should accept or not. He responded minutes later, saying he would sign her up for the class that just became available to hold her spot, but he thought there was a very good chance she’d ultimately get her first choice and he’d just make the change if/when that happened. So far I’m pleased with how all this is going, especially that the advisor seems johnny-on-the-spot. My only discontent is with the early date freshman need to be on campus–it means D will have to leave her camp counselor job a week early and probably sacrifice some all-important parent tips.
