I just have to stop slipper from scaring crzy2rite too much. Freshmen that I know mostly love NYU - I have some junior friends who are transfers - they love it too. Slipper, if the alum you know are your parents’ ages, NYU is quite a different place today - much more changed in the last 30 years than most schools. At a lot of different kinds of schools, freshman year is the one where people make the most friends and feel the most community. surveys say about 70% of students would choose the school again - that’s about the same as Williams College with a tight knit campus that gets very boring after a year or so. I guess since you don’t go to NYU, slipper, it’s a little annoying for you to act like such an expert.

^^ thank you. i was trying to say something earlier, but it just kept on coming out wrong, so i stopped, haha. thanks for putting my thoughts into words.

Slipper: In my experience, NYU students don’t seem to want that “true college experience” and “college spirit”.

As a prospective student, I’d be more than happy than sacrifice all that traditional biz in favor of independence. Then again, for many people, that big city/no campus life aspect just isn’t appealing.

After mentioning I was considering NYU, even my grandpa responded with, “The problem with NYU is there’s no real campus! Colleges should have beautiful campuses with students walking around!”

^^ thanks for the insight, that’s exactly how i feel. NYU students generally are very independent-thinking individuals who are looking for a place where they will be able to thrive on their own, versus within a tight-knit group of school-spirity friends. i know that’s what i want!!

And for that type of student NYU is great. But for someone who wants to go back to reunions with 80% of their class, wants to have a really big social net, go to formals and big parties with people they know, and have lots of “typical college fun” NYU is probably not the right choice.

so what types of people IS NYU good for?

In my experience very independent people who probably are more into a very specific scene (i.e. hipsters into the NY music scene, people strongly into ethnic groups) or people who are into hanging out with very small groups of friends. A more intense lot than most college students. Don’t get me wrong, there are poeple who are very into NYU. But its hardly a “balanced college experience.”

All I’m saying is there is a large subset of NYU prospective students who probably don’t fully understand what they are getting into. I personally know 5 students who transferred out for these very reasons.

I applied to Stern, but now I’m probably not as interested as I was initially. NYU has a great business school, but it really is a lot to sacrifice (the whole college experience) just to be in New York. You can go to NYC on vacation if you really want to be there. However, if you’re going to be studying non-stop, NYU Stern is top-notch and fabulous. Living also costs a lot. When I go into the city, it’s always extremely expensive.

NO, it’s def not a party school. Difficult to get admitted and the degree is highly valued.

haha, slipper, you don’t go to this school- if you know 5 people who transferred out because they couldn’t hack it, then obviously they’re not going to give you a positive outlook on the school. If I took 5 people from Georgetown who transferred out because they didn’t like the social atmosphere, I’m pretty sure I too would get a biased response on the school.

I probably know about 25 grads from NYU in total, including the who transferred. I live on the campus. I work and went to grad school with NYU grads. I took two classes there. I probably know it more than I know most schools.

Any school’s a party school, it just depends who you situate yourself with.

REALLY? :[ , i thouqht maybe it would be fun since it was in NEWYORK!

NYU is an amazing school! I am a freshman in Tisch for Film and Television, and I have never been exposed to drugs or alcohol the way I have when I got here! My room mate has a fake, and thanks to him, I party all the time! So is NYU a party school? A definite YES!!!

I mean i feel like if you like bars, don’t mind paying for some drinks - hookah is popular i know… but traditional party school - nah.

I think I’ll probably end up joining a frat if i go to NYU… I’m a fan of beer - what can i say.

lol i pretty much read all of the posts so TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS:

Yes, if you like to party and have money, there are going to be people like you at NYU. there will also be people who will do hookah with u lol maybe?

unrelated to drinking: nyu is for the student who doesn’t like school spirit.

i personally think NYU is for the MATURE college kids. like it doesnt have the gates around the campus to protect you and it also doesnt have a hang out spot for you and your friends to show off like u did if u did, in high school. Its a really good place for people who are…independent, somewhat wealthy, and like to have fun in the city.

@baby

it’s not that we have NO school spirit whatsoever, it’s that we don’t get our school spirit from SPORTS.

and i agree with one of the old posts: pretty much any school can or cannot be a party school.

oh i didnt mean that in a bad way btw. about the skool spirit. like im not into skool spirit…like for football games and all that. like a lotta kids at my skool paint their faces and stuff…maybe if i was a trojan at USC itd be kool but i still dont know if it’d be that exciting to get all dolled up for a …football game. its not like ur going out to a club and meeting a guy or anything lol so idk. maybe its fun? idk. ive never done it. and i dont have the friends who do that. so it could be fun with certain ppl. but yeah…just to clear that up : ] im not tryin to diss NYU or anything lol i lovvvve nyu : ]]]
