Is there something wrong with me if I can't get a job at Wal-Mart?

Well no I think it does have to do with intelligence. If you write the Great American Novel but don’t bother making it readable, that’s pretty boneheaded. I mean that’s some grade-A knuckledragging.

Like everyone here’s said (and gone way too deep into), there’s nothing wrong at all with not being able to find a summer job.
I got done with freshman year of college and opted NOT to take any summer classes and find a three-month summer job instead…guess what. Not a single retail store in my city (which has a really high unemployment rate, by the way) wants inexperienced college students who they’ll have to train, who then works for three months and quits. They’d rather have those Walmart-type people (as mentioned a billion times in this topic so far) who actually need the health/welfare benefits they can get out of it.

And its not just me, there’s a huge bunch of college kids in my city who thought they could easily grasp a quick summer job but we’re all unemployed. I managed to get a job on-campus next fall (so working for the entire school year, along with classes and what-not).
And hey, this IS a very unreasonable and bitter economy, even my parents say that they don’t think it hasn’t been this hard for a college student to get a minimum-wage job in atleast 30-35 years.

So now I’m jobless over the summer and not enrolled in summer classes. Just been cleaning the house and working out all the time…
Don’t fret over it. Instead, get over it and find anything, anywhere (your campus would be my #1 choice to look for first).

Programming doesn’t have paragraphs, yet people seem able to read it. I’ve watched my friends to programming/java etc and they somehow find a way to comprehend the code even though code is not written in paragraphs (moderate level of sarcasm). It truly amazes me (sarcasm-for DCHurricane). I mean, isn’t it crazy to think that people don’t need paragraphs to read something (sarcasm).?What does using paragraphs have to do with anything? I think people on here just like to use snippy remarks about appearance to make themselves feel better, because obviously they don’t take the time to add any substance to any of their statements. Sorry I don’t care enough to use paragraphs. I really don’t care if “it’s easy to read.” This isn’t class. This isn’t a paper. I am not being graded on it. And somehow, SOMEHOW, many people were able to read my posts fine. For the past 2 years. And honestly, my posts on this thread are almost exclusively addressing one person, so I do not understand why so many people take the time to complain. Unless they are looking to complain about something. I am surprised that of all the things people want to gang up on me for, it’s my decision not to use paragraphs. It amuses me.
"oh my god

isn’t case western supposed to be a pretty good school? how they admitted someone who can’t even hit Enter behooves me. "
I am going to respond in the same manner in which you responded to me.

  1. Failure to capitalize the first letter in a sentence. What trashy school do you go to that you think it’s acceptable to not use capital letters correctly?
  2. Failure to capitalize a formal title.
  3. Failure to call a university by its proper and full name.
  4. Misuse of an informal adjective- pretty. I could never put that in a college paper. And since this board is college like for you…
  5. Failure to capitalize the first letter in a sentence a second time.
  6. Incorrect use of a capital letter (Enter).
  7. Failure to put enter in parenthesis.
    Second post:
“Well no I think it does have to do with intelligence. If you write the Great American Novel but don’t bother making it readable, that’s pretty boneheaded. I mean that’s some grade-A knuckledragging.”
  8. Omission of a comma.
  9. Misuse of “well.”
  10. Incorrect capitalization of Great American Novel
  11. Grammatical error
  12. Insertion of a “saying (grade-A).”
  13. Use of an informal word that is not in a dictionary.
Who are you to make criticisms about writing and my college? If you want to attack people, then you should make sure you are writing at the standards that you wish to impose on others. I am not the d bag that goes “oh you can’t spell your stupid etc;” I am only pointing out your mistakes because of your pettiness. I am not going to go on here and pick people’s grammar/spelling/w/e apart because I make mistakes, because, like I said, this is informal (aka not class) so I don’t proofread. But if you want to make a snarky little comment on paragraphs when you obviously do not take any time to check your posts, you deserve a d bag comment. So for now I am going to be that person, or I mean like the 3rd or 4th “that person.” End of story.
What is the point of even making this comment? If you resort to making snippy comments about my school because I don’t use paragraphs on here, you must be an insecure person. That is not sarcasm. Seriously (slightly sarcastic), what satisfaction do you get out of that (no sarcasm)? But hey, if saying I’m stupid, or not intelligent, or whatever you are implying that I am, and that Case is a bad school because I don’t indent while writing in a 5 line text box on college confidential, than more power to ya’(I’ll let you decide). I’ve seen your threads about your grades, and based on those posts, I would think that someone in your situation would be far less judgemental/petty/snarky/immature and wouldn’t go out of their way to attack others. I’m guessing you don’t think grades measure intelligence, but somehow using paragraphs does? I could say a lot of things based on your other threads (which I have seen over time, and I just realized you are the same person who asks for mature comments/feedback and understanding, yet you are unwilling to be respectful of others), but I am not going to touch it, because I don’t need to go out of my way to make comments that only intend to offend others. I hope you feel better about yourself, because I think your comments are a joke (no sarcasm). And ironic (no sarcasm). I was really tempted there to just press “x” a million times to make one long paragraph, but people on here have an odd sense of humor (no sarcasm). Or no sense of humor (no sarcasm).
Also, while I may be very upfront about my views, I do not make personal attacks on people such as “is s/he high” because I did not understand a comment. That is immature and petty. I am not calling you a w/e for not understanding my comment. I just assume people on here are able to “connect the dots” independently. I apologize for not fully explaining the comment. If you had any questions, you could have asked. No need to get force yourself into a conversation to make a personal attack on someone you don’t know. Additionally, studies have found that cognitive performance increases when a person is under the influence of marijuana, if they are an experienced user. It is an incorrect assumption to think certain substances impair reasoning or cognitive skills, when certain drugs actually increase consciouness (sp?- drugs such as acid, shrooms, other pyshcadelics) and open up channels of the mind that are typically closed and inassesable. I would suggest reading up on the subject, it is very interesting. I wrote a paper on this topic. And of course I just handed in 15 pages, single spaced, without any indents or paragraphs. Or CAPITAL LETTERS, …, , ‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’ or ;;;;;;;;.The Professor thought it was an artistic protest to conformity and gave me an A without reading the paper. Best day ever. Slightly better than the day that programmers required that Java script use paragraphs because students complained it was too difficult to read without them. Needless to say many Case kids were ecstatic.

I am not a Dem or Rep. I thought that it was pretty obvious where I stand on the political spectrum, but I shouldn’t assume that people marred in a two party mindset would understand that there a variety of political views. That comment represents everything wrong with the 2 party system- we automatically assume that beliefs are either red or blue. Luckily people at my school are a bit more aware of this fact. The wal mart thing is 100% political. Their practices are completely influenced by politicians. As I recall Michelle Obama served on Wal mart’s board (I’m sure you know about Halliburton and the strong presence of Wall Street “goons” in the administration), meaning there is def. a revolving door involving politics and big business. Their hiring practices are dictated by labor law, which passes Congress, and they receive tax credits that were pushed through in legislation. Everything about getting a job is related to laws created by politicians. It is completely political. Even economics is political. It’s really amazing. I also don’t see why you care where discussions take place…I sure as hell don’t. Most threads stray from their intended purposes. Just because you don’t want to discuss politics doesn’t mean other people don’t want to. As long as it’s not attacking bystanders, I don’t see the problem.

ABR- I was being sarcastic. I present to you a task- I inserted sarcastic statements throughout this post without identifying it. If you can properly identify each sarcastic statement, I will give you my book of Mark Twain quotes. To ease the burden of the task, I will admit that the previous sentence is not sarcastic.

I just had the sudden urge to add a five million line long section of java script. Man those programmers must be geniuses for working with code that doesn’t use paragraphs. This should be fun.

I didn’t even bother to go past the first part of your post, because frankly, I’m tired and don’t want to look at a wall of text. Again.

And programming doesn’t have paragraphs, but it at least has line breaks. If you want to follow programming language so badly (I’m really not getting this reference, but whatever)
at least type
like so
so that
it’s easier
to comprehend.

Also, enter shouldn’t be in parentheses in his first post (your #7). It’s not an appositive, it’s the direct object. Therefore, it’s grammatically important to the sentence; parenthetical commentary means that the sentence can stand alone without it, but further insight is gained by its inclusion.

Anyways, I’m not sure when or why this English lesson began.

As for the Democratic/Republic comment, I just meant politics as a whole (using a synecdoche). Either way, the OP’s self-esteem being tied to not getting a job at Wal-Mart has nothing to do with politics. That’s all I meant.

Please stop being so defensive. No one is attacking you, except for your confusing desire to ignore typing manners.

No one’s attacking me?
DCH’s statement was an attack. And snarky. But he seems like a bitter person in general based on his posts.
“Is s/he high?”
ABR called me an idiot…
Seems
personal
to
me
I
am
now
typing
in
java
is
it easier to
read my
post now?
I am not calling you any names because you are getting all huffy about something so meaningless, yet people were getting snippy with me, and I countered with explanations and humor, doesn’t seem any different then what you are doing right now. Do you think you are being defensive? Seriously, when did I say I wanted to follow programming reference? For, I don’t know, the THIRD time, I stated programming does not use paragraphs, and people are able to read it. People are able to read HTML and other forms of straight text. Like adidas said, impossible is nothing. Dream big, I think you can, if you want to, overcome such an obstacle.
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
good.
Wall of text for your reading amusement. I guess you have never printed something in HTML format. I have never had trouble reading straight text. I don’t find that adding a tab really makes reading easier. I have trouble reading stephen hawkins even when he uses paragraphs.
If it
bother you that much
don’t read posts
that are not
addressed
to you.
No need to make a crusade against me because I don’t indent. I’ve written on these forums
for
2 years and this is the first
complaint I had about paragraphs,

I think people just find things to complain about when they are annoyed with a person’s comments. I mean, seriously, who the hell gets UPSET because someone doesn’t use a paragraph on collegeconfidential? Of all the things in the world
to get
upset about…
it’s because I write without added spaces? It just doesn’t seem like a big deal. At all. Why care at all? I don’t care if you read my post. I am not asking you to read it. It isn’t about you. But if you choose not to read it, don’t make statements that were clearly addressed in the statement. That is rude.
Text breaks are no paragraphs. I did not say I was writing in programs, I clearly stated that programms lack formal punctuation, and they survive. If you don’t want to take the time to read my post, don’t respond. You missed some really great sarcasm about my 15 page paper…

I also made it very clear WHY I was criticizing DCHurricane’s grammar. I think not reading a post and then making a comment is ignoring forum manners…but hey, that’s just me. I have horrible bouts of insomnia so I try to kill some time on these boards. It gives me a nice feeling that
there
“confusing desire to ignore typing manners.”
And I ponder why people bother attacking such a thing when they commit plenty of errors themselves. Including yourself. Why exactly do you care that I don’t indent paragraphs?

“As for the Democratic/Republic comment, I just meant politics as a whole (using a synecdoche). Either way, the OP’s self-esteem being tied to not getting a job at Wal-Mart has nothing to do with politics. That’s all I meant.”
I disagree completely. Most things are linked to the political system, it is extremely complex and interconnected. For instance, I lost my job because there are laws that state PA is a right to work state, meaning they can fire you for very petty reasons. If politicians in DC wanted to protect workers, and implement a European style system, and such a bill passed, I would still be employed. I was fired because of the right to work law. I don’t think it was fair, but it’s legal. Wal mart has an in with DC. they get incentives to hire certain people, so they give preference to those people over others, all because people in DC say so. If the laws were different, the OP would have had a much better chance at getting the job. That was explained extensively.

I liked the cut and paste definition of quotations, especially the part that said it would be considered proper to use them for “enter.”
“further insight is gained by its inclusion.”

Regardless, that part was addressed to one member, because he thought I lacked intelligence for not using paragraphs, even though he committed multiple mistakes- meaning he lacked care of his post, which he criticized me for.
Mind your own business, you are not involved in that discussion. Go do something productive- like creating a paragraph function for Java.

I happen to see computer commands parenthasized regularly in directions and directions. I don’t need lectured by a freshmen when I have taken English classes and read Strunk and White and have received A’s in essay based grad classes. My Prof said I should publish my research paper. Which of course didn’t contain any paragraphs.
xxxxxx

Seriously, if the highlight of your day is coming on here blasting me for not using tabs on an internet forum, I can understand why you are taking this so seriously. I don’t understand why you want to read my posts if you are complaining about their political content. Seems like you are just trying to start something because other people were. I mean there is no reason for why you made your comment in the first place. You could just not read posts that don’t relate fully to the topic. I know that may be difficult, but people do it all the time. Read pertinent info, everything else, leave alone. You don’t get notifications if people comment on your thread. The OP is not complaining, just you. Plenty of my threads have wandered, it never offended me. Classroom discussion rarely end were they began. Somehow the world keeps spinning.

Ah, people made unjustified personal attacks to make themselves feel better. I am going to reply. Because I can’t sleep. And it is funny to see how seriously people take this site and how they react to things, when they also can’t formulate a sound argument. If my typing bother you, don’t read it. And don’t respond saying you didn’t read it and continue dialogue. You will look silly because the items you are talking about were already addressed.
Get a life other than *****ing about paragraphs. Copy and paste it into word and make your own if it’s that hard to read. Do something, don’t just complain.

Here is a dummy proof post for you whiners. I guess you were angry enough to complain, but not angry enough to cut and paste it into word. As requested by karabee. Now you can take the time to read the entire post. It would explain a lot of your ?'s.

Programming doesn’t have paragraphs, yet people seem able to read it.
I just had the sudden urge to add a five million line long section of java script. Man those programmers must be geniuses for working with code that doesn’t use paragraphs. This should be fun.

Ok, lets all calm down and stop taking other people’s comments over the net so seriously.

As a CS major who has actually programmed, not watched somebody else do it—I will kindly inform you that the coding is supposed to be, some extent, broken up or layered to make it legible. It’s basics 101.

But thank you for giving me a lesson on programming.
I’ll remember it the next time I need to shovel out long, compressed difficult to read blocks of C++ just for you.

I’m not going to comment much because I’ve veered this thread way off topic and because I’ve already made my point (not to mention I could only really skim the text walls), but I will comment on a few responses:

That’s true for my mom. Because I’m single and can’t claim dependents as an eighteen year old, I pay federal taxes on my paychecks (and everyone pays FICA and Social Security). I’m netting $9.05 an hour on an $11 rate. Certainly not bad, but I’m definitely paying taxes.

A ticket is only $300 round trip.

Yes, but I’m working 40 hours a week plus 3-10 hours per week of overtime and tutoring at $25 an hour all summer. That’s a chunk of change. I also made over $2000 for my graduation party.

I’m usually quite frugal. However, I purposefully have purchased almost nothing for myself in almost four years so that I could splurge on things I wanted for college. I also do not intend to do any more shopping for 2-3 years. That means I’ve been able to save money for those luxury expenses.

Indeed; in fact, in many cases you could even put all of your code on one line and the compiler would be fine with it… this doesn’t mean that such an action is good programming practice–people are not compilers and would like a modicum of organization in the way text is structured. Also, I seriously hope you don’t plan on publishing a research paper lacking even basic English grammar with the expectation of being taken seriously. Maybe if you were submitting something for a poetry contest, it would be fine… but “artistic” composition has no place in formal research papers.

“Additionally, studies have found that cognitive performance increases when a person is under the influence of marijuana, if they are an experienced user. It is an incorrect assumption to think certain substances impair reasoning or cognitive skills, when certain drugs actually increase consciouness (sp?- drugs such as acid, shrooms, other pyshcadelics) and open up channels of the mind that are typically closed and inassesable.”

What studies? One of my pet peeves is people using the “studies have found” phrase without citing the actual studies…

Studies have found that if one microwaves a frog for 30 seconds it turns to solid gold.

And… I am sure high people love to think that the gibberish they spout is very intelligent and developed from a higher consciousness than that of a person in a normal state of mind…hah.

Thank you for the admission. Closing time…
