Guys, how would vassar and university of rochester be as matches? Both seem quite good cost wise,if not major wise.
So,should I apply questbridge?
Your family income is on the high side for QB, so it probably doesn’t make sense for you to apply unless there are extenuating circumstances. Meaning a large family, or no to very low assets, for example. Is that $85K-$90K income just for your mom, or both parents combined?
@Mwfan1921 actually for the questbridge application I only need to list the custodial parents’ income, which is less than $17000(QB wants < 65000). The colleges will want my dad’s info too but ONLY IF I become a finalist and rank colleges
Now,I’m not a first-gen tho.
The colleges I’m looking at for QB would be-Princeton,Stanford,Columbia,UPenn,Yale,Rice(any more suggestions based on major?).
QB’s 75th percentile SAT is 1470.Mine is 1520. And the listed income will be one of the lowest for sure.
Of the applicants around 39% become finalists.
From the finalists around 19% match.(last year stats)
SO should I apply QB?
Sure, it sounds like QB could make sense, but the timeline is tight…only apply if you can put together a strong application by the end of the month. Also, 70% of finalists are first-gen so the odds are against you.
You still need to make sure you have at least one affordable safety, where are you on that?
Good luck.
Yes,I was thinking rochester institute of technology would be a good one.
Also, do you think I should rank my QB colleges or apply through RD if selected as a finalist?
Search “15 Best Value Small Colleges for a Chemistry Degree.” Suggestions for several undergraduate-focused, or simply smaller, QuestBridge partners, such as Swarthmore and Caltech, will appear.
RIT could be good, if affordable. They are FAFSA only I think, so the NPC should be accurate for you…but RIT does not meet full need for all students. ARE UT Dallas or Univ Houston still possible safeties?
Yes, for QB, you should rank your colleges…that is due Oct 15. There are different rules for each QB partner school depending on whether you become a finalist, or not.
If you become an unmatched finalist, many QB partners will allow you to roll over your QB app into the regular round, some even allow the applicant to still apply ED, it varies by school. https://www.questbridge.org/high-school-students/national-college-match/after-match
For non-finalist QB applicants, not all partner schools will allow QB applications to roll over into RD. https://www.questbridge.org/high-school-students/national-college-match/non-finalists
@Mwfan1921 yes, but there is another option where I may choose not to rank colleges, but if I become a finalist I can apply to their colleges through RD via questbridge, free of apllication fees. So should I take this option or will ranking be better? Please suggest.
RIT tends to be relatively weak in some core areas of potential relevance to a student with your background. For example, as far as I can see, it doesn’t offer a general math major, which would reflect on the rigor of its math offerings in general. It also registered few recent CHNOPS graduates (9) for a school of its size (https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=Rochester+Institute+of+technology&s=all&id=195003#programs ).
Why would you give up the chance to become a finalist and potentially match? I’m not sure I understand that, but I could be missing something. If you are a non-finalist you would still be able to apply RD to many QB partner schools.
Can you add anything @hkimpossible? Also, aren’t there some active QB boards that you are/were a moderator for that might be a good source of info for OP?
Well because if I don’t match I’ll have wasted the opportunity of early applications to some unis, and if I do match I won’t have control over which it’ll be. Instead if I am a finalist I could apply to a LOT of colleges RD for FREE.
Plus statistically questbridge rd has a higher acceptance rate than matching anyway.
Since you rank your QB colleges, if you do match, you match the highest ranking (based on your rank) college that admits you. Basically, it is like applying ED to multiple colleges, ranked in order of your preference.
That all makes sense. A few things:
-What schools would you apply early to, which you would forego if you ranked QB schools?
-If you don’t become finalist (Oct 21 notification date), you will likely still be able to make early deadlines.
-You do have control over the schools you rank (if you choose to rank), so you do have control over where you match. Only rank schools you would like to attend, then matching to any would be a great outcome.
-If you don’t become a finalist, many of the QB partner RD applications will also be free.
First step is to get your application finished, as the deadline is Sept 29. You can decide whether to rank or not after that.
I would forego Harvard,GeorgiaTech, and U of Houston.
Also, is there a list of which college will be free if I dont become a finalist?
Guys,I was considering Univ of wisconsin madison and univ of virginia as match/safeties,plus their high chemistry and bio sciences rankings.Npc seems good too if I get a scholarship. So should I apply to those?
What sources have you used for your rankings? Few exist for U.S. undergraduate programs by major.
With a family income in the $85-90k range, H and P (and other well endowed, full need schools) will likely be almost full ride based on financial aid. Run the NPC’s for each school.
Agree that you need more match schools, but I think you can keep your list down to less than 15. EA at H, GT and UH is a good move because if you can get into one, all schools lower on your list can drop off.
Assuming you will be treated as in-state, another potential safety would be Texas Tech where merit will also be available to reduce your costs.
UVA is a safety for no-one and I don’t think UW-M is for most either. Matches maybe. You’d need to check how generous they are with aid to OOS students too.
