USC, on the other hand, is known for engineering, and it has a great school of engineering, based on research funding alone.

Princeton has a very good engineering program and has more faculty in the National Academy of Engineering than USC…and it’s a lot smaller school. Harvard, although being criticized for weak engineering is not too far behind USC in NAE membership.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/princeton-university/1084863-national-academy-engineering-announces-68-new-members-2011-news-item.html

True. Look at HYP’s National Academy of Science membership:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/princeton-university/1334351-national-academy-sciences-announces-new-members-news-item.html

Note: Princeton, MIT, Caltech and Berkeley don’t have medical schools…so their results are even more impressive.

Again, HY&P are not known for engineering, despite their academy members.

^ USC isn’t really either for that matter…

None of the USNWR Undergraduate Engineering Rankings list USC in the Top 10.

When did STEM stand for just engineering? Last I checked, Harvard and Princeton were pretty damn good at the math and sciences. USC not so much.

I’d cut Viterbi some slack. I think they were #7 last year, while this year they’re #11. That’s pretty good. They could easily be in the top 10 again next year. I used to work in aerospace, and USC engineering was very well regarded.

I probably know at least 15 people with engineering degrees from MIT, and a handful of people with engineering degrees from Cornell. I can only think of one guy I know with an engineering degree from Harvard, and nobody with engineering degrees from Yale or Princeton.

Viterbi was supposedly #10 in the grad school engineering rankings, despite having no grad engineering disciplines listed in Top 10. They were never top 10 in the undergrad engineering rankings.

Not saying Viterbi programs are poor at all…it is a strong regional player in engineering, just not nationally known for engineering like MIT, Georgia Tech, Purdue, etc.

USC is known for its world renowned film program.

Harvard excels in nearly all the sciences, and in mathematics. The only reason it lacks in engineering (and "technology) is probably due to its proximity to MIT (~2 miles)

Well, Viterbi was kinda #7 -

[Viterbi drops three places in graduate school rankings|Daily Trojan](Viterbi drops three places in graduate school rankings - Daily Trojan)

For those enamored by rankings, USC Amnenberg School of Journalism was ranked number five (5) by NewsPro Rankings:

[USC Annenberg | NewsPro ranks USC Annenberg top-five U.S. journalism school](NewsPro ranks USC Annenberg top-five U.S. journalism school | USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism)

DocFreeDaddy, Annenberg is an outstanding school and I would have no problem whatsoever recommending it to any kid interested in communications or journalism. It’s also known around town for having excellent internship programs which get students right out in the field and helps bridge the gap between school and work.

BTW Simba I’m pretty sure that’s what I was talking about - I was pleasantly surprised to see Viterbi ranked in the top 10 although in the particular ranking I saw, its reputational score was around a 3.9 and lower than all the other schools ranked around it, whose reputational scores were all probably at least 4.2.

Simba, the error in Viterbi’s ranking was noted on CC by Sam Lee…that thread was picked up by Inside Higher Ed who then confronted USC about the error.

Think again. 1.8 billion is correct.

Here is the breakdown:
https://www.uclafoundation.org/finances.aspx

Your info is from 2011 and so is mine. The only difference is that I’m talking about net.

My bad. Yup did more research and you are correct. But my point still remains the same:

“Since USC is planning on raising 1 billion for health science campus alone (which will be used to recruit the best faculty and students; and build better facilities -see link). I suspect that USC Keck will surpass UCLA and UCSD as the southlands top medical centers.”

I am curious to know how much UCLA allocates to their medical center. I’m sure it is significant.

UCSD maybe. UCLA, however, has had the best medical center in California for like 30 years (better than Stanford, better than UCSF, etc.) It’s not about to fall solely because USC’s going to inject a ton of money into Keck. The only school i possibly see surpassing UCLA is probably Stanford, maybe within the next decade or so, but even that’s up in the air.

It should be noted that, in terms of research, Health Sciences are UCLA’s bread and butter. I don’t see it falling in quality anytime soon.

According to this, it was at least 1.6 billion, although this is for much more than just RRMC:

[Stanford Hospital & Clinics names Amir Dan Rubin president and CEO](<a href=“You’ve requested a page that no longer exists | Stanford News”>You’ve requested a page that no longer exists | Stanford News)

Stanford plucked this guy from UCLA by doubling his salary i believe (which was already like +$1m) Gaining him would probably significantly increase the quality of their hospital, which is ranked really, really low:

UCLA: 5/17; Stanford 17/17

USC never cheats, UCBChemEGrad!

My appreciation of USC’s engineering school is based on my perception during the 1980s of USC’s close ties to the aerospace industry. For example, USC, through its interactive instructional (closed) television network, continued training professional engineers working at all of the major aerospace companies in Southern California such as Lockheed, Hughes, Rockwell, etc. Much of the focus was on NASA and the space shuttle program. At that time USC and Stanford were the only schools in the nation offering such a program. In fact, USC has built a stellar aerospace program due to the space and defense programs. The symbiosis between USC and the aerospace industry is similar to that of the film industry and in part reflects the history of the region.
