Is your town like a LAC, a big state U, or a pre-professional school?

In terms of what LACs actually are (small undergraduate-focused schools with small faculty led classes at all undergraduate levels), that does not exclude quality math and science education.

“Liberal arts” includes math and science, as well as humanities and social studies.

Definitely a tiny, wealthy and smug LAC. Population of around 2,000, all of whom think way too highly of themselves. I long for the anonymity of a big city.

A mid-sized private with a large tech component, but not exclusively tech like the engineering schools, located in a pretty, natural setting with good amenities. Maybe Bucknell?

The dying industrial town in upstate NY that I came from was more like a reform school - violent, depressed, people making plans for when they get out.

"I finally gave up and started giving my kids extra math problems at home. "

-You are not the only one. Good for you to recognize the need. And I agree, you cannot fix this machine, just make your personal adjustment. Your kids are the lucky ones!

That sounds like one of those for-profit on-line schools.

Come to think of it, my town’s more like a small isolated college with a heavy Greek presence. In order to pledge, you have to make at least $1MM/year or be related to the Kennedy family.

I moved to a middle america LAC community with tree-lined streets, cafes, a mixed population of Germans and Swiss, with loads of community pride from a large city, big state U, center of middle earth, multicultural population, close to current major battles and also tourist beaches. I like the change for now.

My town is like a one-room schoolhouse.

We live near villages that have one K-12 building, no school secretary, and the principal takes turns as a custodian, school nurse, or a substitute teacher. Nothing like going on a college campus tour of a school with almost the same population as your entire county.

I didn’t see “High School Drop-Outs” on the list.

Actually, it isn’t like a large state university, it is a large state university.

Depends who you ask–either KU or K-State.
I have no idea what most of my neighbors do for a living.( Hope it’s legal.)

When we moved here 23 years ago, our town was a CTCL… not too big, a welcoming friendly mix of people from different backgrounds/different age groups in a laid back town somewhat isolated from the nearby big city and the speed with which life moved there.

Now our town is more like a preppy competitive elite LAC. Dramatic growth over the years has changed it to a bastion of suburban yuppiedom for the most part.

Huh. My town is a LAC, definitely. Elite for this state, but with a strong laid back and artsy element. Lots of people who deliberately choose to live away from Boston/NY/Chicago/LA kinds of places, but may well have grown up in those more high-pressure environments, and went to Ivies or the equivalent and top LACs. Some actual farmers whose families have been here forever, mixed with those who keep chickens and raise alpacas, sheep, or goats as a hobby. Outside a great little city with a strong cultural presence.

We might be Carleton. Or Bowdoin. Or Middlebury. Or Vassar.
