ISP won't accept my name as ID because of embedded "jew"

dke, the term “goy” is Yiddish for a non-Jewish male. It has historically been used as a pejorative descriptive term, although that was not part of its its original meaning.

thanks, dg5052…interesting in that I’m female!

“Goy” literally means “nation” in Hebrew, and it is used to denote nations other than Israel (in its Biblical, not current political) sense. Sometimes it’s still used in that sense, although dg5052 is correct - it is used pejoratively as well. Sometimes you can tell from the context.

While those who really know Yiddish or Hebrew use “goy” to connote a non-Jewish male, it is used for women as well, given its real meaning. Or, more often, the term “shiksa” is applied to a woman (usually when she’s dating or married to a Jew).

Could you show them this list of the 50 most common Polish surnames and get them to allow the characters j-e-w if they were part of the name Majewski and Maciejewski? These are really not uncommon names in the U.S. Every big city phone book has a few folks with these surnames…

Unless neither of these is your family name… Then this wouldn’t help…

Just a thought

Neither of these is my family name, but I have found a solution. There’s a website, dslreports.com, with forums on many ISP, and special forums for direct communication with techs from a few. Optonline has a direct forum, and I posted my problem yesterday afternoon. By evening I had an email account with my last name as ID.

Problem solved. Thanks to all!
