Yeah, we are also at a loss regarding the test schedules. My D has not taken any tests yet (well one AP), but this year we need to figure out how to take PSATs, SATs, ACTs, 2 SATs and II. All this has to be completed before the ED deadline for Barnard.

well, we don’t get to pick when to take PSAT. For those who are taking AP classes, early June slot will be for SAT IIs. So, the question is really about which test you will pick ACT or SAT I, and when. Remember, not all the test dates are availble for all states.

The reason I suggested Oct ACT to DS is to get a understanding where he stands in these test. Our next target date is next March. Will decide if it is SAT I or ACT after Oct ACT results.

My ds is in Colorado this week on a school-related trip (while we swelter in another 100+ day). He’s done one week of volunteer work already and will do two more when he gets back. In a few weeks, we’ll be visitng colleges. He has a job from mid-July-early August.

One SATII taken this June. So…PSAT Oct 08. Then SAT March 7 09 and probably again May 2. 2 more SATIIs (likely physics and math II) June 6 and maybe ACT June 13. Only one AP this spring. Doesn’t sound too too stressful, does it? ;)

Wow, this thread has been very active today. Let’s see, so far D has taken 2SAT IIs and one AP. For 11th grade, she will take 2 or 3 more SAT IIs and 4 APs. Naturally, she’ll take the PSAT in Oct. of this year. Not sure about when she’ll take the SAT - depends on her PSAT score, I guess. Same goes for the ACT.

D’s summer is going to be a busy one - she’ll be working, volunteering, studying for the SAT, studying for a science exam, doing all her AP summer assignments, going to a 4-day training program, and possibly going to a one week sports camp at the end of the summer (doubtful, since it’s her only week off the whole year). Also, she’ll be running, biking, and spending time with friends and her BF who will be going off to college. Hopefully, she will also be able to squeeze in driving lessons! We were hoping to squeeze in a few college tours in August, but I’m just not sure how to fit that into her schedule. The few days we have available, are the days right before her BF leaves for college, and the last thing she will want to do is go away then! I’m not quite sure how we’ll fit the visits in over the school year either, but I guess we’ll have to figure it out somehow.

Why so many SAT IIs? The most any college requires is 3, right?

You’re right, Queen’s Mom. Well, D wasn’t satisfied with her score on her first SAT II (it was a 730 in Bio freshman year). She is thinking of studying engineering, so for that she will need the Math II SAT II and either Chem or Physics. She took chem this year but we don’t know her score (that’s why I said maybe 2 or 3 - whether she takes the physics SAT II will depend on how well she did on the chem test), and she’ll probably take USH because her history teacher this year recommended that she take it. At least 2 of the schools she is considering requires 3 exams, so if one is Math and one is Chem or Physics, she would like the high score in history to be considered rather than the score she got in Bio. Hopefully, that makes sense to you.

I’m really concerned about scheduling the testing. This is one of those areas where I can honestly say that my brain doesn’t work this way. She has the PSAT in October, then the ACT in April, 2 SAT IIs in May, SAT in June, along with two APs, 3 IBs and 4 Regents exams. She also has to have X hours of CAS done and a substantial draft of the extended essay. I’m glad I don’t have to do this stuff because I couldn’t do it. Oh, and driver’s ed in the spring.

zoosermom - not sure about the ACT, but most students take the SAT in May and the subject tests in June (more of the coursework is complete). APs are given in May, not sure about IBs, and of course Regents exams are in June. I do know some kids who did exceptionally well on the PSAT who took the SAT earlier to get that out of the way, and that worked out well for them. Most kids that we know took the ACT in June of their junior year (it was the week after the SAT IIs). Good luck figuring it all out - it’s not easy!

If I recall from D1’s experience, she took the SAT I at the end of January(all of this is during her junior year, of course), the ACT in April, took the SAT II’s in May(she didn’t take as many AP’s as D2 will be, so I don’t think this will work for next year), then took the subject tests in early June). Besides the AP exam issue, I think that this timeframe might be too condensed for D2, because she seems to have more time consuming extracurriculars. It would help, at least, if, rather than waiting until April she could take the ACT in December (if not October…). Not to mention the fact that the April exam date and prep period could conflict with spring break/college visits.

LIMOMOF2, that’s great that your D managed to possibly get two subject tests out of the way, already!

momonthehill - at D’s school, it’s fairly common to do what D did. The school recommends taking the SAT IIs after the kids complete honors Bio and honors chem. I think most of the kids were not satisfied with their Bio scores (the class doesn’t cover the entire curriculum for the Bio SAT II), so many of the kids end up taking chem as well (honors chem curriculum does cover the material on the SAT II).

I’m sure you’ll figure out an exam schedule that will work for your D2. I think I’m going to have a bigger problem scheduling college visits than exams. My D also has a demanding EC schedule, and I just don’t know how we’re going to do it. Most colleges don’t do tours/info sessions on Sundays, and that is the only day that D normally has free. Even breaks are taken up with sports!

D was planning on the PSAT in Oct, SAT I in Jan, SAT II math in June after pre-calc, SAT II English in June after AP Eng lit. That gives her time to retake SAT I in May. The only problem is fitting in ACT (and she seems to be doing better on that one in practice than SAT).

Queen’s Mom - I’m pretty sure the ACT is given on a different day than the SAT/SAT IIs, so you shouldn’t have a problem fitting it in. For example, I know kids who took SAT IIs this June and then the ACT a week later. It’s probably like that throughout the school year - I just haven’t looked into it yet.

Queen’s Mom - here is a link to the ACT test dates for 2008-2009

[ACT Registration : 2008 - 2009 test dates](<a href=“ACT Registration | ACT Testing Dates | The ACT Test”>ACT Registration | ACT Testing Dates | The ACT Test)

Just make sure to check the dates it’s available in your area.

Yes, it would be great if, somehow, the colleges could hold tours and info sessions on Sunday. It would certainly make long distance weekend trips more worthwhile.

Thanks Limomof2. I just checked it out and it looks like October, December, April and June. I suppose she can take it as early as October. I will have to talk to her tonight and see if we can schedule everything.

Queen’s Mom - just remember to make sure it’s available at a site near your home. It’s only available at D’s school in Oct and June. It is available at another nearby school at other times, so it looks like we have options as well. Good luck to you (and your D of course).

Is anyone planning any road trips this summer and would like to share where they are going?

We are doing upstate New York this summer and just visiting campuses. I am not sure how useful it is in the summer, but it is basically a vacation with some college visits thrown in.

We were planning to visit some schools in the Boston area in mid-August, but we’ve put that visit on hold for now. If I can figure out another time to go, then maybe we’ll still go.
