It’s UF decision day – post results here if…

32 and 31 ACT scores

Beccanole72~ My son and your son appear to be in the same situation in-state Florida~Aerospace Engineering. He has been accepted to UF, Purdue, GT, VT, Embry-Riddle, UCF, and others. Deferred MIT, CalTech, and U-Michigan. Even with scholarships offered for out-of-state schools, IN-State is hard to pass up! Bright Futures, etc… Honestly, we did not consider UF due to the holistic review process (oldest son did not get in 2013 with same stats & extras, attended FSU Honors “Go Noles” & is now in his 2nd-year of Med School) Now that my son has been accepted to UF, not sure? Same, NOLE MOM with possible GATOR son!

Hi! Yes, lots of decisions to make. We are still waiting for two more decisions in late March and April 1st. My husband and I met at FSU, Boosters and Season Ticket Holders --so its a may be a lopsided House Divided. My son isnt much into college football and cannot name a UF player to save his life…so maybe on that one day in November it will be a calm one if he ends up going there. LOL. Then again maybe he will catch football fever while there. Who knows… GOOD LUCK TO YOUR SON!

Accepted y/n: Yes (Female, W)
Intended major: Biomedical engineering
Term: Summer B
In-state or OOS: In-state
UF recalculated GPA (if you don’t know, then list the next two):
Unweighted GPA: 3.9
Weighted GPA as your school weighs it: 4.4
ACT and/or SAT Score: ACT- 30 (combined; took the ACT twice getting a 28 both times)
Notes on rigor (like number of AP/DE/AICE): 1 AP, 1 CLEP, numerous honors courses and over 60 credits worth of DE courses by attending a local community college full-time my 11th & 12th grade years (My school does offer the IB Program but I chose not to do it)
Class Rank (%): top 3%
Extracurriculars of note and things that make you stand out (like service hours, awards, varsity letters, volunteering, clubs, you know the drill): 102 total service hours- I did some tutoring in algebra and geometry but most of my hours come from volunteering for a STEM summer camp for kids. I’m in STEM Club, math honor society, and I held an officer position in Key Club my 10th grade year
Was your essay great? (Be honest): Honestly, I did not spend as much time as I should have revising and working on my essay, but I feel like it is one of the best things I have ever written in my academic career. I wrote about my passion for math and how I believe that it’s the language of the universe.
Why do you think you got the result?: 100% my essay. I know a lot of kids have the same stats as me or even better, so I don’t exactly stand out in that aspect.

On a side note, I just want to thank everyone on CC who has given me advice in the time I’ve been on here. I’m a Gator because of your help!

Accepted: No
Instate
33 ACT
3.8uw, 4.5w
-11 honors courses, 8 AICE courses, AP Capstone science research program
-a few minor Art awards
-6 years w Girl Scouts incl mentoring a young troop x 2 yrs

@FLmom1226 would you mind sharing class rank?

@flprepaidmom
Just outside top 10%. I forget the exact numbers & they say they don’t rank but then the guidance counselor tells u if u ask. She was like 65 out of 500+

I feel like the top 10% was kind of a non official cut off. Last year about 77% were in the top 10% and this year must be higher. I guess we will find out eventually. Her stats are really impressive. I’m sure she will succeed wherever she ends up!

The insanity for me is trying to detrmine why one was admitted and the other was not. One is heart broken and the other hides her excitement. as to not upset her sister. Their applications and qualifications were very similar but we are unable to explain to our daughter why she was denied. They have been best friends their entire lives, always together and dreaming of joining their big brother, a current Gator.

@irishtxun have you considered appealing the decision? I have twin D and I can empathize with what you are going through as my twins have been planning to go to the same college since they started looking. I can’t begin to imagine how hard it would have been for my D if they had not both gotten into UF. My D stats are pretty identical with the exception being some different EC activities.

@irishtxun Wow, that’s a rough one. There are many heartbroken kids out there but yours has a tough twist.

One thought that is only based on my observations. The consensus on here seems to be that UF has certain benchmarks but it also compares kids from the same schools. Somehow, kid one was on the right side of the line while kid two wasn’t. But the line has to be drawn somewhere. Sucks.

I haven’t gone through and looked at all the decisions as posted here but my initial takeaway is that if you didn’t have an unweighted GPA in the high 3.8s +, then you probably had a hard time. I’m guessing most kids who had all As and maybe 2-3 Bs – plus a rigorous schedule, a good (not necessarily great) test score and respectable ECs got in. But it is a complicated formula.

I would say it is worth trying the appeal process, particularly if you can present something new. One poster on here whose son got in on appeal said he thought his son benefitted from the second look of the appeal.

Good luck.

My Daughter was Accepted!!!

SAT: 1500 (one sitting)
2 APs junior year

EC: community service, part time job, one varsity sport
Why accepted? Sort of surprised because on CC it sounds like UF is heavy into course rigor and liking it when kids pile on the weighted classes. I applied with only 2 APs under my belt, so I guess it was my SAT score?

I notice there are a few here with experience with both UF and FSU (@Bobbiejr7 and @Beccanole72)- either with kids attending and or having gone there yourself. My son was accepted to both and we have to decide now without the possibility of a visit from OOS. We had planned to visit over spring break but everything was cancelled.

He plans to study physics/astrophysics, and it looks like both schools are good in those areas. Cost is the same for us as he would attend on the Benacquisto NMF Scholarship at either school. We’ve never been to either campus or city, so we have no location preference.

He was accepted to honors at FSU but NOT at UF. In my mind, this could make a difference. With honors he’d have guaranteed housing and have early registration as well as some other perks. With no honors at UF, I’m worried about housing and not being able to get classes or classes available only online. I’ve heard that UF has a lot of courses online. Not a fan of that.

More things to compare, I’m sure, but can anyone speak to housing, the amount on courses that would be online and thoughts on navigating UF without the perks of honors?

Physics/Astrophysics do not have online classes like some other colleges.

Thanks. What about required general courses? I would assume those classes would have large numbers. Do students have to take some of those online?

@Melissa96 What is your feeling about whether the fall semester may all be online anyway, given the state of Florida’s poor management of the covid19 situation? And when can students expect to hear from the university about that?

I would sure like to know myself. I can’t imagine UF or any school for that matter really know yet. Hopefully, they will have a better idea before the end of April, but even then, it would still be three months before the beginning of the Fall semester.

It is fair to say that all the schools would go this route if the current situation continues to be out of control. I wish all the schools would move the commitment deadline in order for everyone to make the best possible decision, but I can see how it might not be logistically possible for these large Universities.

^^ My d just got a detailed email from FSU this week about their current policies relating to covid19 and indicating that any student who needed to have the commitment deadline moved should contact the school and they would accommodate. Nothing from UF as yet.

We received the same email from FSU as well and we like that they are being proactive. UF has been pretty good so far with their communications and hopefully, they will equally as proactive. Our problem is ever greater with UF due to a summer B admittance and school starts in June. That is looking more like it would be online and orientation would be online as well and none of this is ideal.
