If anyone wants to follow the results live: https://www.nytimes.com/elections/results/virginia-governor-election-gillespie-northam
I’ll probably just end up disappointed again so watching mindless sitcoms on ABC.
No so disappointing after all!
Very quick call in VA!
And an openly trans candidate just won a state rep position in VA!
I think R’s in VA have already lost at least 14 state legislature seats too.
And no surprise Murphy won in NJ, also.
I didn’t even know there was a Gov race in PA.
Go Virginia!! Here in Nassau County we have an important race for County Supervisor as well as several important propositions on the ballet.
Checking for understanding here- VA elects their Lieutenant Governor separately? But the Gov & L Gov run on the same ticket?
Separate races for Gov, Lt. Gov and AG. You vote for individuals, not a ticket.
We will have the first results of WA races at 8:15. Two more hours.
Wild horses couldn’t have kept me from voting in my SouthEastern Va. precinct today, though my back did try. I wrenched it while bending over to pick something up this morning, and so ended up hobbling very gingerly from my car to the poll, casting my ballot, collecting my “I Voted” sticker, and returning home to take more Motrin. Right now, my heating pad is my best friend. Voter turn out can make all the difference in a tight race. I didn’t want to factor into my candidate losing. I’d like to think I helped him win tonight.
Looks like Con Con getting crushed 3-1 in NYC so it’s pretty much a done deal.
Maine voters appear to be saying yes to Medicaid expansion. Fingers crossed they get it over the line.
I voted once in VA years ago. It freaked me out that they didn’t put political parties on the ballot. Is it still like that?
Before that I had only voted in NY. There were so many parties on the ballot that it was comical. If you hadn’t done your research, you could tell a lot about a candidate if they had been endorsed by multiple parties - not just D or R, but also conservative, liberal, libertarian, right to life, and even “ratepayers against LILCO”, lol.
*LILCO = Long Island Lighting company
Party affiliation is now displayed alongside the candidates names on Va. ballots, greenwitch. Also, there are volunteers from both parties at the polls who hand out “sample ballots” to willing voters. I actually don’t recall a time in recent times when party affiliation wasn’t shown next the candidates. How long ago did you experience that?
We have candidates here in WA that “prefer” a party. ![]()
We also have a perennial candidate - no jokes.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodspaceguy
“Goodspaceguy has sought public office more than a dozen times,[4] including those of United States Senator and Governor of Washington. Though never endorsed by a party, he has contested elections as a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian and as a candidate of the non-existent “Employmentwealth Party” (under Washington elections law, candidates can declare themselves a member of any party, whether the party exists or not). In the 2014 race for Washington’s 7th congressional district, Goodspaceguy identified himself with the “Work and Wealth Party.”[5] His best electoral showing was in the 2003 race for King County Council district 8, in which he polled 16 percent of the vote against Dow Constantine.[2”
@poetsheart - I think it was the Dan Quayle election.
We had (or still have) The Rent Is Too Damn High Party In NY. Even ran for guv in 2010.
The Rent is too damn high guy is pretty amusing. I remember the local city counselor, telling us how appalling he thought all the little parties were, but he had to play the game and try and get their endorsements. My favorite is when one candidate invented a party to get more good sounding lines and the following election the other major party hijacked their line. Payback!
Our very good friend (she was H’s office wife for many years) is running for town supervisor as the D candidate in a town across the river from us which is a R stronghold (not my Congressional District.) She is up by 35 votes with half the districts counted. She was down an hour ago so I’m still keeping my fingers and toes crossed for her.
