@sly123 I would think that a district that can repeatedly elect a virulently anti-queer candidate wouldn’t be bothered by his misgendering of her.
But I’m glad he’s out and she’s in, no matter the reason.

Danica Roem, the transgender woman who defeated Virginia’s self-styled homophobe-in-chief, was interviewed tonight about her opponent. She declined to criticize him, saying “I don’t attack my constituents. Bob is my constituent now.” Class.
That political ad from Roem (video with the Slate article) is amazing.
I did not follow that race, since I couldn’t weigh in on it, but I don’t know if I want the D’s in control in WA. They are awfully anxious to tax everything and anything, hysterically so. They have huge revenues, yet it’s never enough. So much for making Seattle “affordable”…
“I moved last week to a different state. We immediately registered to vote but you have to register 30+ days ahead of an election to be eligible to vote”
This kind of stuff drives me nuts. Living in a country with abysmal voter turnout, we should be doing anything we can to encourage voters to turn out. Same day registration should be allowed across the country. There are many, reasons, including moves, where people can’t register 30 days ahead of time. We need to stop putting roadblocks in the way of people voting. Voter suppression is too rampant in this country in all kinds of little ways and it’s not good for democracy, IMO.
Our good friend won her election for Town Supervisor! 52% to 48%!!! 1590 to 1475! So happy for her. When I finally went to bed last night after 1am she was still up by only 35 votes with only 3 districts in.
Roem outspent Marshall by $400K, with around $600K of money from out of state activists. As a resident of the district, I am not at all happy that my district was essentially high-jacked by out of staters with an agenda that has nothing to do with my concerns. Despite Roem’s insistence that this campaign was about traffic on Rt 28, everyone knew that this turned into a referendum on social/gender identity issues.
For a district that went heavily for Clinton in 2016, it should not be too surprising that Roem won over an incumbent who almost lost in the last statewide election year (2013). It wasn’t karma that Bob Marshall was defeated by a transgender person - he was targeted because of his positions and because the district’s demographics were changing in the democrat’s favor.
This is a huge feather in the cap of the transgender movement, and my little district is making national news because of that. Brings out my inner curmudgeon, not that it is hidden very deeply in general…
Northam wins, so Latino Victory Fund says that they will “double down” on their ad campaign that caused some controversy. Haven’t seen their anti-Gillespie ad? It’s easily findable on YouTube - check it out if you haven’t seen it.
I am generally very happy with the results of the election. It seems clear that the people were sending a message to Washington, and I hope the message continues to be delivered until the tide turns.
We had our town council vote yesterday. There were three slots open. The difference between the 3rd place finisher (who is elected) and 4th place (who is not) was 1 vote. My husband, father, and I all voted and I will never skip an election. The person we voted for came in 3rd. We have some pretty important environmental issues, and this one vote which decided this tie-breaker spot on the 5-member council might make the difference. Amazing.
Media take on VA Governor’s race: Never Trumper establishment GOPer loses in state that went for Clinton => referendum on Trump… Well, sure, why not?
Bigger test may be next year with potential Corey Stewart challenge to Tim Kaine for Senate seat. Stewart would have to win Republican nomination first against heavy Anti-Trump resistance in NOVA.
I am not too surprised by Democratic wins in VA. A house divided against itself cannot stand, and Republicans are heavily divided into Pro-Trump/Anti-Trump camps. Dems must be very encouraged for next year’s national elections.
final election post for now… Today is the one year anniversary of the last presidential election. Several hundred people are planning to commemorate the day in Boston and elsewhere by getting together to “Scream helplessly at the sky on the anniversary of the election.” The event is being organized via Facebook.
@dragon90 ever hear of the Koch brothers? Outside special interest campaign funding is certainly not unique to Virginia and conservative donors do it as well if not better than liberals.
In PA voters approved transferring property tax revenue to sales tax. On the radio station today people were saying that if landlords don’t have to pay property taxes they will “surely” reduce the rent they charge our huge population of renters in this second most impoverished city in the country. Like that’s gonna happen! So they approved it. Now they will pay sales tax on nearly every good and service in addition to their same rent payment.
And anyone else notice how Fox completely ignored the election last night and buried results on their website today?
That is really sad about sales tax. I know when it goes high, some small business owners will offer to skip it if you pay cash. That happened to H and I when we bought our wedding bands in a 10% sales tax district. I don’t want our sales tax in this country to be so high that it encourages cheating.
It’s more than a little inaccurate to say Pennsylvania voters approved transferring property tax revenue to sales tax. What they approved was a constitutional amendment that made it permissible for property-taxing jurisdictions (generally municipalities and school districts) to completely exempt homesteads from property tax. Before the amendment, they were only allowed to grant a homestead exemption for up to 50% of the median home value. It remains to be seen how many towns will take the opportunity to do that, and how broadly, and what they will do to offset the lost revenue. Sales taxes would definitely be an option, but so would raising property taxes on commercial and rental properties, taxing wages, etc. I think lots of places have enacted the pre-existing exemption, but the economic impact of that exemption is nowhere near what that of a full exemption would be.
Yes @KKmama I know of the Kochs and Tom Steyer and lots of others and would prefer if they all kept off my lawn!
Last night’s results really should be seen as a shot across the bow for the current administration. The endless smear campaigns and propaganda against him appear to be paying off, and I don’t see the GOP having any good ways of countering it.
Kind of like how the media continues to downplay and sweep the DNC scandal under the rug? ![]()
How on earth is this thread not political? Other threads have been shut down for less.
Outside money has always and will always be a thing in politics. People in general only seem to complain about it when their side loses.
Corporations are people too.
