-4, with -15 windchill, at the moment in Toronto. Even my dogs don’t want to go outside!

Philly suburbs: My just-washed hair froze when I went out to get the paper this a.m…I was outside about 30 seconds at the most.

I took a walk at -20C today, it was refreshing and quite confortable. Finally some normal winter temperature…

/OK, technically it is below normal here, especially now.

Just came in from a 2 minutes walk. My nose felt like it was about to fall off. The good thing is the snow’s melted, so I don’t have to skate and the sun is shining brightly.

D just called from NYC- she is staying with a friend who lives in Astoria- she says it is 1F with windchill and for some reason, although she brought all her ski socks- she didn’t bring any long underwear.
( she is wearing her friends underwear at the moment- who is a guy and larger than she is - but a friend who is the exact size as she- and who she shared clothes with at Reed, she will also be visiting in NYC- so I hope that
she remembers to give her clothes back before she leaves!
)

* Its 52F here at 10am, yesterday it was 57F*

I thought of this thread when I woke up this morning on the coldest day of the year to a charming discovery! No power since 2 AM when a huge tree on my neighbor’s property was knocked down by the high winds, taking a power line down with it. The tree smashed part of our fence, but otherwise we were very lucky to have no damage to our house. Of course, being that the tree fell over onto our side, we are the ones who are responsible for its removal.

With no power, the house was a complete icebox by the time we woke up. It took the electric company all morning to dig out the lines and reconnect us - they said it was one of their toughest jobs in a long time. Meanwhile, I took my own advice to LTS and wore those hand and foot warmers around the house today. They were great! After that I took refuge in a friend’s house for the rest of the morning. We just got the power back, so no need to call the hotel for tonight!

roshke, I think I am glad you got your power back. But if the hotel was going to be elegant and pampering… not so sure.

You wouldn’t believe how cold it is here the past 2 days. Tomorrow, snow.Am sick so am in. This is dangerous weather.

jmmom, LOL! You are right, having to book a hotel wouldn’t have been the end of the world. And I would have gotten a nice meal out in the middle of the week too! ;)

Would you like to hear of the nice experience I’m having now in the Dutch Caribbean on free trip that I got to do some volunteer work with teens?

Hmm. I guess you wouldn’t like to know about this. :

I am very seriously tempted to cancel tomorrow’s meetings (but of course I won’t really) and fly home a day early…I have a 4:00 meeting, and I don’t want to go to it, because that means leaving my hotel room. I had to go to a meeting this morning at 7, and finally caved and called a taxi back - the wind is ridiculous…

its freeeeeezing.
and windddddyyyyy
when its this cold, I wear a tank under my t-shirt, layered under another t-shirt under a sweater, cardigan, or sweatshirt
And I wear tights under my jeans
and fuzzy socks with boots

If you MUST wear a skirt, layer your tights.

I think a scarf always helps too-- it keeps out the drafts and usually dresses up whatever you’re/I’m wearing…

All this time on C.C. lately because it 's too cold to go do anything!

LOL, I flew back “home” yesterday, never was I so happy to board a plane. I left an afternoon meeting in a snow storm, was supposed to be on a 6:40 flight, and, was so desperate to leave - the thought of a potential cancelled flight and spending one more day freezing was just untenable - anyway, I got on standby for an earlier flight, checked my luggage on that flight, but then discovered an earlier flight was delayed, so managed to grab a seat on that as well.

Unfortunately have to go to NYC Sunday night, and it looks like this means freezing again. When does spring come exactly?

We’ve warmed up to a balmy 16 degrees, our expected high for today.

Spring, what’s spring? LOL

Went for a walk this morning. In Northern California, the way you know it’s spring is that the birds sing early. So you can walk out as the sun is rising, there are still pink washes in the sky, the birds are tweetering and chirripering, and you know it’s spring.

Daffodils are already blooming here. And the trees, all the odd ones that people planted that come originally from South Africa and Australia or whatever, are blooming. While the native oaks just kind of stand there. Their branches make patterns the same as when you try to run water through dry sand. Good for just staring at.

Even at my advanced age of 50, on a spring day here, it’s possible to feel happy for no reason whatsoever, just because you can walk and hear birds and breathe.

Not to say that winter on the East Coast and spring on the East Coast don’t have their joys. Just that spring here is very subtle. And even so you can have that whole life is worth living experience on a spring morning.

latetoschool, it won’t be as bad this weekend when you’re in NY–our weather forecasters are happily telling all listeners that temps will reach the 40s by the weekend–and it does look as though we are supposed to be into the low 50s by next week. These last few days have been brutal though.

BlueSon just called --he had checked the SoCal temperature online and said that it was exactly 100 degrees difference compared to NH.

Brrrr, my daughter’s attending a conference in DC this week. Before she left, we went to a nearby city for some last minute shopping for the trip, and I noticed a tree in bloom and commented that she might get to see some cherry blossoms…uh, guess not!
