Ivy League Inferiority Complex

There was a thread on this question not too long ago. Cornell is ranked around 4 in the Ivy league because it has a lot of international prestige that the other schools don’t enjoy. Also, its engineering school is the best in the Ivy league, and one of the best in the world.

as an AEM major, ill be completely honest. even though AEM is arguably one of the best undergraduate business programs and 2nd best in the Ivy League, if i had gotten into Harvard for econ or something like that since they don’t offer business, i’d be there in a second. that isn’t to say Cornell isn’t great. i love it here. i’m sure many would agree. but that isn’t going to stop me from taking full advantage of the amazing opportunities that await me at Cornell at all.

Sachmoney, don’t forget the Hotel School is not only very prestigious, but it’s also considered the world’s best.

No one thinks about this or cares about it once you get here. Once you’re at this school you stop thinking about these rankings and things people–largely high school students–might say about cornell’s standing. Like someone else said, you’re really mostly concerned with the quality of your work and your future, not the appearance of your school’s name on your sweatshirt.

The most superficial talk about rankings you’ll ever hear is usually coming from high school students currently applying to schools. They seem to be the only people who think it matters. It’s mostly because they don’t really know what it’s like to be in any college, let alone the difference between going to HYP versus going to Cornell.

Cornell2012- How do I feel about this [supposed] inferiority complex students have?

I couldn’t care less how Cornell “ranks” within the Ivies. Everyone knows it’s a good school and that most people internationally recognize the name- beyond that, who the hell cares? To be frank, those in the minority, like you, who actually care, and actively think, about where Cornell ranks within the Ivies, just annoy the rest of us (not because we’re indignant at the possibility that Cornell might rank “lowly” - I quote because it’s a ridiculous idea - but because the fact that you even care in the first place is pathetic).

Please go do something more useful and meaningful with your time than try to press the (actually non-existent) prestige-related “buttons” we supposedly have.

Yeah…the hotel school is the best and the oldest, it’s like the Wharton of hotel schools. I think that’s a good comparison…

When I first got into Cornell, I was ecstatic, but I was also a little apprehensive. Cornell wasn’t my first-choice school. I had applied to a few other Ivies, and didn’t get into them. I definitely had the belief that Cornell was “inferior” to the other Ivies.

Once I stepped onto campus, I forgot about all of that. I have had a great time here because of all the resources I have access to and the incredible people I’ve met. I know only one person who has an inferiority complex about Cornell’s rankings compared to other Ivies, and he’s slightly neurotic anyway. Most people are happy here. Cornell is highly regarded, no matter where you go. If Cornell is truly the right fit for you, rankings shouldn’t even matter anyway.

Depends on the major…for engineering yale and harvard are a joke and cornell is the best in the ivy league. For economics - harvard hands down. Hotel…Cornell. Law…harvard and yale. Choose the school for your degree and remember the thousands of kids who would die to get into any ivy league school. Cornell has a ton of international recognition - more than Brown and Dartmouth, but those are great schools too. There are only 8 ivy league schools in the country out of the thousands of schools - all are impressive!

“we’d all realize that the ivies are all pretty much the same and stop fighting over whether there are 3003 or 3009 schools in america that are worse than our own.”
"There are 4100+ pluses colleges and universities in the U.S.

Cornell is considered and consistently ranked in the top 15. 99+ percentile."

These things should leave you with nothing to feel inferior about.

How does Cornell compare with the other Ivies in terms of science majors, such as bio and chem?

yeah don’t worry. it’s just a psychology thing. even yalies feel inferior to students at harvard.

And harvard students feel inferior to…god? Well nobody likes them anyway :)

Ever hear the “we didn’t go to harvard” song?

I know this thread was started in seriousness, but all I can think is “well it’s the clear #1 for me!” I’m not there yet, but I got in ED. it had all the things I was looking for: big school, pretty area, not too far to travel.
and CALS is just the kind of place I would have made if I was inventing a school at Cornell for me.

so in my mind, which is the only mind that matters in this case, Cornell is superior to all those other Ivies.

you all do realize that most of the important things we have today like AC and the pacemaker were Cornell contributions right?

and “inferiority complex”? what is that? never heard of it. as far as i know, we’re the sh it.

“you all do realize that most of the important things we have today like AC and the pacemaker were Cornell contributions right?”

:)
