Jacket

My daughter just bought the Sun Valley down parka from Eddie Bauer and loves it. I like a less downy coat so I don’t sweat when I’m shopping. My last couple coats have been the Laundry by Shelli Segal brand. More fashionable than warm, but warm enough for going from car to store.

“Moncler jackets are really nice, but pricey. My D got one when she traveled to Russia for a semester abroad. Turned out to be unusually warm that year. Go figure.”

She made the right choice. Some places are very brand conscious. A Nordstrom SA told me that he sells a pair of CL Pigalle shoes or boots to a MSFT manager every time she needs to travel to Moscow.

OP: There are some good coat sales this time of the year! Keep your eyes on RueLaLa and HauteLook.

Canada Goose jackets seem to have better quality control than Moncler.
I wouldn’t order online.

I’m really not a hood person either, but I love this longer jacket so much that I overlook the hood. The jacket is extremely lightweight. I am in between a 10 and a 12 in clothing and the large regular length fits me perfectly.

I also love this jacket and have it in 2 colors. I am 5’9" and have one in large regular and one in large tall. (diff is about 2 inches more coverage on rear end) 8-|

If I were buying, I would get this:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/diane-von-furstenberg-faye-quilted-down-coat-with-genuine-fox-fur/3815265

Have not noticed any slipping in the quality of Moncler, but Burberry has gone downhill (based on what I see at Nordstrom).

If you really can splurge… Google Max Mara. You will not regret it. A 56 yr old woman with a big coat budget can do much better than a North Face down parka.

I’m not getting carried away. I don’t want to go crazy with price.

BB beat me to it. Its cold where I live. I have a North Face transit jacket. I’ve been really happy with it. Super warm but light. Before this one, I had a down jacket from lands end.

I have a really warm jacket with a down zip in layer. Hate it. First of all, it’s too warm. And so heavy. The North Face is perfect.

Interesting thread with lots of great suggestions. Makes me wonder, though, about the seams on down jackets. I would have thought the wide stitching across the jacket (seen in the Eddie Bauer options) would tend to make a person look wider which, for most of us would not be something we’d want. This is in comparison to any other type of stitching (boxes, diamonds, etc., like the NF transit jacket). Kajon, have you found this not to be the case?

I went to the mall and tried on a bunch this morning. So many made me look bulky and I’m not a big person. You’re right the North Face Transit looked the best on me. Of course, I couldn’t find the color I like until I got home and looked online. I still haven’t made the final decision. :-?

I like the new styling of the Transit a lot. Have you looked at Patagonia Kai Lee or Fiona?

See if you like the styles at Eider - slim cut European brand, not particularly popular here in the states. Dynafit is another, plus another mention for Arc’teryx. They are meant for active people, not boxy cut the way so many jackets are. I would skip Uniqlo - OK if it’s in the 20s, but they are not warm enough if you end up in serious cold weather.

I have this coat in black. It’s good down to -10F.

I’ve been wearing it in Maine winters–and last year in the midwest during a huge cold snap/blizzard event–and have been perfectly warm.

That’s specifically why I liked the EB I first linked to - it was NOT bulky like many I had tried on. Do you have an EB store near you??? I’m super picky about coats and can’t stand anything that is very constricting.

I’ll have to go check out the local EB. I wish their snow color wasn’t so white. I’d really like to go with an ivory color. Maybe I’ll go by there before I place an online order.

Does anyone who has the NF Transit have trouble with the feathers coming out? So many people who have reviewed the jacket complain about loss of feathers!

D’s jacket is old, so this might not apply to newer ones, but hers never had an issue with feathers.

Mine has had problems with the feathers coming out but not many, just a stray feather here and there. I talked to the north face store and it is guaranteed. I can send it back and they will “repair” it. I forget now, I don’t think they would replace it. Honestly it’s not much of a problem and I forgot to send the coat in.

I’m thinking that when they redesigned it, they fixed that problem.

I also found my transit to be more flattering than many down coats I tried. It also is the perfect length

Yes, Deb, I really like the length. So many of the jackets I tried on today were very long and kind of swallowed me up since I’m not that tall. I’m glad to hear that the feathers aren’t a huge problem for you. Maybe they have fixed them going forward. Thanks for the info. I like the Moonlight Ivory.

I’m 5’ and the Arc’teryx is an xsmall. I noticed that French coats come in xsmall also. There are lots of choices out there.
