Jahi McMath Update: Set to Receive High School Diploma

It’s not posthumous, either. Since she is according to them, not dead.

Lol, part of my post pointing that^ “fact” out somehow did not make it into the post, so it reads funny. Yup, she is “not dead”, so it can’t be a posthumous one, so let’s give a diploma to all kids who were absent from school for a semester. Here is my “conspiracy theory” plot of what is going to happen next: the mom succeeds to enroll her in HS studies, Jahi “graduates” from HS, and soon her mom and uncle will be trolling CC asking for her chances at HYP etc.

This is tragic. I had assumed they let her go at some point after the story “broke” in December/January, it’s terrible to see this is being prolonged.

The uncle comes right out and admits they coerced the school into complying with their demand:

The gall of this family just boggles the mind.

Yeah, they are really something. I do hope the eventual court cases are televised. What a show!

She’s braindead anyway, it’s not like she’s out there applying for jobs. Let her have the damn diploma if it makes the family happier. Really shouldn’t make a difference to anyone else.

Vlad, it sets a bad precedent. She is not dead according to the parents, so she gets a diploma… what would preclude the parents of any other kid who misses school to lobby for a diploma? Really, what would it say about the school?! And now the uncle has one more piece of “evidence” that the girl is still alive - she graduated! Dead people don’t.

So… Where’s the legal eagle who was representing the family in the beginning of this mess? I have not heard much from him lately.

Oh him.LOL! He said his job was done when she was “rescued” from the hospital. Really, making this family happy is not going to be accomplished until they get a big settlement. Sorry, that’s just a fact.

And, the uncle would like a movie deal.

A REALLY big check. Yup.

Umm, why would somebody, dead or alive get a diploma if they have not fufilled the requisite classes? Pretty sure she missed the entire 8th grade. Disgusting.

Wonder what kind of FA package she’ll get when when she “graduates” from HS. More than my kids I’ll bet. A corpse brings diversity to a new level.

I don’t really care about this case but I have attended commencements where dead students were awarded their degrees, recently one who was a semester shy of completing his requirements. I can’t begin to imagine the pain involved for the families and if it brings them some measure of comfort I am all for schools doing this. It’s certainly an issue wish deserves sensitivity.

Well, she is “not dead” - according to the family, so it cannot be a posthumous diploma.

Why, she should go to Transylvania, of course.

Does her condition qualify her for extra time on the SAT? ( I am sorry, but I just couldn’t resist.)

“Sealey said today that it has been a while since he has been to visit Jahi,”

So he doesn’t have time to visit her but he does have time to talk to reporters and get his name in the paper?

I think that the character of the uncle has been clear for a long time.

Well, she’s dead so I doubt she really gives a flip about visitors at this point. It is a curious situation, though.

So very bazaar. Really.

You all have misread the article. The parents asked for an honorary diploma from her EIGHTH grade graduation–NOT high school! A somewhat similar situation happened in Southern CA seven years ago. Emily Shane was killed by a driver who was actually trying to kill himself on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu during Spring Break of her 8th grade year. I do not remember how Malibu Middle School handled the “diploma” issue from 8th grade, but there was a brief mention made of Emily at the ceremony. It seems to me that since she died within a couple of months of her graduation, there could have been some sort of recognition, but I do not recall. All 8th graders wore a purple wristband in her memory. Four years later, (just last week) the class that would have been her high school graduating class once again wore purple wristbands in her memory and a brief mention was made by the ASB president at the graduation. Emily’s parents have handled this entire ordeal with grace and they established a foundation in her honor. (BTW, the guy was eventually convicted of 2nd degree murder in her death.)
