Jeffrey Epstein arrest and prosecution - is anyone following the case?

You can read Mary Lou Jepsen’s opinion on Medium, search title “MIT Media Lab’s Joi Ito out in disgrace & there is more to do”. . She was the former MIT Media lab professor who went to Google and Facebook and now onto something new. She was duped, apparently. But now angry. It has links to interesting discussions about MIT and Epstein, the funding of sciences, and how dirty money moves around.
MIT students certainly were protesting South Africa divestment back in the 1980s. There is oil and gas money, defense money and other types of money. Its all pretty hazy about private money though. There is a big ethical hole, I would say for moving private money into private universities, however, Harvard, MIT and all schools are super anxious to take your money. Thus Epstein/MIT scandal and the “side Door” college admissions scandal have something in common.

I don’t see MIT any worse or better than the Roman Catholic Church. Humans are infinitely fallible. This Epstein case really gets under people’s skin as he seemed to get away with it, sort of. He is dead though. He got the death penalty is one way to look at Epstein. I don’t know that we are arresting sex traffickers very often, as it does seem its a crime that no one cares about very much. There is no real special torture for men like Epstein, or Weinstein actually. I thought Epstein would get out of jail free card on double jeopardy in fact. There was no guarantee that the New York State case would have locked him up for good. It was very very old cases, reminds me a lot of Brett Kavanagh and the fun and games he had at Yale and high school days, his funny “calendar” and how really boys will be boys in spite of “me too” . No one cares about date rape. Sex trafficking is slightly more serious, but really we don’t arrest these people. Its kind of legal, in our society to abuse poor girls.

SMH.

@travelnut The reason is its not prosecutable. Ask any woman at any engineering college across the country. Its about 90% have had some unwanted sexual interaction, not all rapes, but close for many of us. Professors are hitting on girls at engineering colleges almost constantly. Its just a way of life for women in many walks of life! . And its rarely reported and almost never ever prosecuted. And there is no jail time for date rapes. (Unless you are a swimmer at Stanford, a little boy , who is feeling up an older girl, and then, yes you get to pay, if you have sex outdoors, and someone sees you, and the girl passes out.) Yup, you will get about three months for that! Rape is legal , period. That is the fact. Find me a list of rapists that are in jail. There are not any, for date rapes ! . Also, Weinstein will go free, mark my words. See Brett Kavanagh. And then Epstein, he did not stay in jail very long! Its legal, pretty much to date rape in the USA. Thats why it happens on every single college campus across the USA every single day. Girls need to get smarter though. Reporting it will do nothing, we know that now!

Huh, I was a female engineering student (BS and MS) and never had a single problem. My professors were all respectful and professional. None of my friends mentioned any harassment, either. I think to say that profs are hitting on girls almost constantly is totally inaccurate.

This is getting silly.

Why wouldn’t that be possible? Someone who is evil may not necessarily be evil in every aspect and activity. (Anyone ever own a Volkswagen or Ford car?)

I think I read an article once written by one of Hitler’s secretaries. She raved about how kind he was to the staff. She didn’t excuse his other behaviors, but said it was hard to reconcile the man she knew with the man he actually was. So yeah, even bad people do good things occasionally, though perhaps not always with pure intentions. Sometimes they do good because it benefits them in some fashion, but the good deed does in fact benefit others as well.

Prince Andrew has asked the Queen if he can step away from his duties for a while.
