JetBlue: Where are the bargains?

<p>When my daughter first started flying to her college, the JetBlue fare was $39 each way. Now, it’s several times more than that. And additional increases are ahead, for all of us, at least according to this article. It’s something to consider when looking at colleges far away. We fly my daughter home and back three times a year, but we’ll start looking at Amtrak or buses, despite the longer travel time.</p>

Airlines have raised fares or increased surcharges, partly to cover the rising cost of jet fuel, at least 10 times so far this year — most recently on Thursday, when American Airlines and Delta Air Lines raised ticket fees again. The increases have wiped out many of the discounts the carriers offered in 2007 to fill planes.

Airlines say fares may rise further, given the steady climb of the price of jet fuel. “Fuel is a substantial hit, and we do need to cover the cost of fuel in our ticket prices in the long run,” said Edward Bastian, Delta’s president and chief financial officer.</p>

<p>“We’ll be looking for opportunities” for further fare increases, Gary C. Kelly, chief executive of Southwest Airlines, added last month.

<p>mdcissp is right about Tuesday and Wednesday being cheaper, sometimes Saturday can be too. Don’t know if Pittsburgh is served by Spirit Air but it very el cheapo, they run these very flip e-mails that describe the cheapo flights and prices.</p>
