JHU Admission Officers' Corner

Hi, I just wanted to know about JHU’s IR or History program. How good are they and how would rate study abroad? Any experiences?

Does anyone know what the BME acceptance rate is overall and for regular decision?

@realityhitshard the BME acceptsnce rate isn’t published (at least i haven’t been able to find a published number). However, based on the size of the incoming BME class and anecdotal evidence from faculty i estimate the BME acceptance rate to be between 3% and 7%.

At a similar presentation, we were told ED acceptant rates were inflated because they included jocks on scholarship (who technically had already accepted admission offers), immediate legacies, protege’s of major donors, and ‘shoo-ins’ like Siemens Grand Prize winners, etc. (All the applicants we met there seemed to have had extensive research experience in high school.) It was suggested that competing against these people was harder than RD.

However, ~if~ they truly do consider the ED rejects along with the new RD applicants, then perhaps your file would get a second look. They may have a pile of rejected ED’s labeled ‘accept during RD’. Plus, going ED certainly shows you’re serious.

Still, it’s hard to look impressive against the ‘shoo-ins’, and human nature makes it harder to change your mind: accept something you’ve already rejected.

@realityhitshard - ask them. I seem to recall the ED/RD numbers being provided at an on-site presentation. (FYI, you apply to attend their on-site programs.)

@bookobsessor - “they see your answer but not the question you actually chose to answer” Since they read a gazillion essays, I’d imagine they can recite the prompt questions by heart, and can guess which one you’ve chosen, and judge whether you’re adequately answering it or not.
