JHU Admission Officers' Corner

Hello, I wanted to find out if students at Hopkins have to wait and take prerequisites before being allowed to conduct research. My son is doing his own research at a med school in our area and would like to continue it in college. Can he communicate with professors beforehand about this? How should he highlight it on his application? Thanks.

You shouldn’t be doing your work for your son, and he should go all out. No requirements but ambition and hard work.

AdmissionsDaniel-
Question about Essay #2: Is it really supposed to be an essay, or a simple response? I’m applying completely undecided, and wrote a concise 150 word response, and feel any longer os just dragging it on. After all, undecided is undecided- should it be longer though? should I try to explain more? Thanks for the help =)

Many people starting doing research within their first weeks on campus, so there are no prerequisites or requirements to do research (as there are at other universities). If you’re a freshman who’s interested in doing research and you find a lab willing to take you (quite likely given your son’s experience, but still likely without any experience), there’s nothing stopping you from working there.

Let’s try to catch up with responses:

Applicants to Johns Hopkins University that are required to submit TOEFL scores may apply to the University and be considered for admission even if their TOEFL scores do not meet our minimum requirements for each TOEFL section. However, one’s chances for admission are severely impacted if applying with TOEFL scores that do not meet the minimum scores. We recommend that student’s re-take the TOEFL so that they meet our minimum suggestions for TOEFL in each section..

Sorry but a question about what makes a school stand out needs to be answered by that individual student. I can’t tell you whether Hopkins is better than any of the other schools you are looking at because that relates to the personal characteristics you are looking for in a school. I can recommend the Hopkins Forums ([Hopkins Forums](<a href=“Hentai 44 - Hentai porn”>Hentai 44 - Hentai porn)) and Hopkins Interactive ([Hopkins Interactive](http://apply.jhu.edu/hi/)) where you can get a ton of student input about what makes Hopkins distinct. Good luck.

jeli25:
Hopkins students can start research as early as freshman year. See this discussion thread on the Hopkins Forums to learn more about Research:

mterry22:
Yes the second essay question that asks about your academic interests should be considered an essay and not some short answer question. This essay matters a lot in the review. Answer the question fully.

Hi! I was wondering how you know if your letters of recommendation and counselor’s letter have been received by Hopkins?
Thanks!

If your letters of recommendation are missing, then the Operations team at Hopkins will contact you directly to complete your application.

-AdmissionsDaniel,
If we applied ED to Hopkins, and are completing the CSS Profile forms online, do we have to fax, email, send in a copy of our parents’ tax returns? All help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Just a curious question, how hard would it be to change majors after being accepted or during the first year of college?

hi, i applied ED and i submitted the regular CSS PROFILE in time but i didnt know i also had to submit the noncustodial PROFILE until yesterday.. i submitted them today, but does that mean i wont get any financial aid if i do get accepted?

hi, just wondering how long it typically takes to process a person’s application and then make a decision? for example, if i submitted my application around nov. 13, do you know when i should get a response?

Dante09: Applicants to Johns Hopkins do not apply to a specific school or specific major and are not admitted to a specific school of specific major. That means it is extremely easy to change your intended major upon enrollment and throughout your freshman year. Also, due to the lack of restrictions, after you have declared a major, it is also easy to switch your major or add a minor or double major throughout your years at Hopkins – all you typically need to do is fill out a one-page form and speak with an advisor. (The one exception to this is the BME program – you must apply and be admitted into this major as an incoming freshman.

mephistomaster99: You need to contact the Financial Aid office directly - 410-516-8028 or fin_aid@jhu.edu.

piano09: Johns Hopkins does not have a rolling admissions process. Early Decision applicants will be notified on December 15. Regular Decision applicants will be notified by April 1st (no specific date has been selected right now, but it will be one of the last days in March).

Through what medium do applicants receive their acceptance/deferral from (mail or email)?

Please search old threads before posting a question …

Hey AdmissionsDaniel,

I’m a RD applicant to JHU, and I was wondering if you guys would take a research proposal type of supplement regarding this cancer project I’m working on. I think it’s on a pretty high level, and it would better represent my abilities as a biology, and potentially, med school, student at JHU. Thanks so much for your reply!

.serendipity

Applicants may submit supplemental information of their choosing. If you plan to submit research, we would prefer your research abstract – not the full research paper. Additional information regarding submitting supplemental application information can be found here:
[Hopkins Forums -> Supplementary Material w/ Application](<a href=“Hentai 44 - Hentai porn”>Hentai 44 - Hentai porn)

Thanks for the reply, AdmissionsDaniel. Would an abstract of the proposal be okay then, since I have not actually finished conducting the experiements yet?

Yes, an abstract of a research proposal would be fine. As I said, applicants may submit supplemental information of their choosing – we do not restrict what you can send us, but there is no guarantee that supplemental materials will be reviewed.

Thanks again, AdmissionsDaniel. One last question - what length would you like the abstract be to maximize the chances that it will be read but still have it achieve the effect of providing a more complete image of my abilities?
