Joaquin…are we worried yet ?

Four graduates of the Maine Maritime Academy were on El Faro, the missing cargo ship: the captain, an engineer, and two other crew, one the second mate ( a woman). Today I was listening to Maine Public Radio and the announcer played the Navy Hymn (Eternal Father Strong to Save). She could barely speak afterwards. Although they have not given up hope, it does not look promising. They have found one body and no survivors so far.

As soon as I saw this on the news, my first thought went to the likelihood that some of the crew were graduates of Mass Maritime Academy ( since I know a few ) I texted my daughter to see if she knew where one of her close friends , a 2013 grad was. Thankfully , he was in Europe after a family wedding. Very sad and heartbreaking for the loved ones

Sad news for so many people. My D was evacuated from her apt on Monday due to the dams breaking, and was just allowed back this morning. She’s Ok, but many neighbors lost cars and had some flooding in their houses. She just texted me to figure out if it was OK to shower under a boil warning. I told her not to get her head wet and keep her mouth closed. Hope they get the water situation sorted soon.

24" of rain! It sounds like snow fall instead of rain fall. Is the water receding yet?

D said all the water in her area (Gills Creek) was gone, but there still may be more flooding downstream apparently.

We live on a river coastal North Carolina. The amount of water we’ve gotten is unbelievable. Our pier is 6 feet off the ground and it was covered with water. Many roads have been impassable due to standing water… The schools in our county were closed Monday and Tues.

My MIL lives on the Outer Banks of N.C. . The main road that fronts the beach in her area was ravaged by huge waves for days. It finally just caved in.

Friend got “locked out” of her neighborhood in Columbia yesterday after she ran an ill-advised errand, only to return to find the principal road to her neighborhood barricaded. Fortunately, a kindly policewoman led her to an alternative route to get back home. Her neighborhood abuts a small lake. What was she thinking?

As for the SUV that ignored a road barricade in Columbia and ended up submerged, I understand that they have found the bodies of two of the passengers. People are so foolish in times of distress.

It sounds so much like what we in NJ went through with Sandy three years ago…the devastation was unreal , but the community really pulled together and we pitched in to help where we could.
Sometimes, this is just as helpful if not more so than relying on officials to get things done. I was so impressed with a group called Samaritan’s Purse that just came in with volunteers from all over the country to help our community

The water is receding but some dams and the canal are still compromised and not out of the woods yet.

@megpmom- I’m about 15 minutes from your daughter and we’re being told that showering is okay. We are using boiled water for drinking, cooking and tooth brushing. If reports are accurate, I think we are all going to be boiling water for quite some time.

My thoughts and prayer to those who have experienced the trauma and heartache of this storm, the family members who have lost loved ones, and those faced with losses from this, on one hand I was very relieved that we got very little from these series of storms where I live, but I also feel a little guilty celebrating the luck we had and seeing what happened elsewhere. I also hope that those, politicians and otherwise, who experienced this storm think twice about denying help to others, now that they have faced this, while after Sandy I didn’t need much help, I am glad that those who needed it got it or eventually will get it (sadly, there are still a lot of people who need help that haven’t gotten it, 3 years after Sandy).

I dunno if you’re getting delivery of packages, but if you are, you could get a water filter like this one:

^Thank you.

The Maine Maritime Academy just announced that a fifth alum was on El Faro. :frowning: This is hitting hard here.

Attended the Clemson/ND game last week…have never been so wet! Even with raincoat, rain poncho and boots. Was there with 10 twentysomethings and many bought boots (me too!) as we knew the tailgating would be muddy mess. Went to 4 stores before finding any as they were sold out items. Before we left town, dropped a number of used once rain boots at Goodwill. And yes, we stayed for the whole game! And of course, as many were leaving Clemson on Sunday, the sun appeared.
Sadly, see that there is rain in forecast for the game Saturday…

^ notre dame mom here who watched that wet mess - notre dame / clemson. You are a dedicated fan @ gosmom, what an adventure and epic game. I assume you are a clemson fan- :)>-

Lake, the news on two dead men got worse. The barrier that was there was moved by someone else not them. The were RR workers from out of town.

@megpmom I’m pretty sure my daughter is in same complex as yours. As teacher she has been out all week. Her apartment was not damaged but loss of power caused her throw away all cold food.

We belong to church in affected in-town area and have 35 families with damage. Mostly extreme. In fact friend who just lost her car isn’t included. She teaches at USC and is trying to figure out what to do with her half semester class that has a scheduled final on Monday while helping a friend who lost home.

Still a mess here

In fact all the water is moving down the river systems and now, in the bright sunshine, water is flooding towns down stream and on coast. As with many disasters the worst of Sunday storm happened in the dark. Several I know were wakened by gurgling noise of water under house or in duct work. Series of small dam breaks had water rising really fast

South Jersey…I am mom of a house divided…The consensus was we will do this again when Clemson next plays ND—in 2020! I’ll probably have to sit through a blizzard then
