That piece said the firefighters aren’t being laid off, support people are.

And some probationary firefighters, it seems. Morale is sadly low. Was your wildland firefighter job cut? We want to hear from you

If you consider IRS employees to be law enforcement (against the white collar crimes of income tax dishonesty), then thousands of them are likely to be laid off soon.

I really do feel for these young folks and pray mine hold on to their jobs.

Not everyone is cut out to be a public safety employee - they are hard jobs and take certain personalities to be good and effective.

Mine will be in a job that has partial federal funding.

So far so good. In fact, while she had an offer a few months back, she was given an official location this week.

Here’s hoping commitments to all these kids receiving offers are kept.

One of my kids is in the middle of interviews right now. One position is NIH funded :frowning: but so far the interview is still on.

ShawWife was talking to someone whose boyfriend is a post-doc at Harvard or MIT in some biology/genetics related area who was scheduled to give his job talk at Harvard a couple of days after Harvard announced its hiring freeze. I think he gave the talk but there is currently no job.

I suspect the hiring market for universities and funded entities will just be paralyzed.

Same. My son has a job lined up with a government contractor. Defense work so we’re optimistic that it will continue but I am anxious about it.

I agree 100%. “Shotgunning” was discussed earlier but that doesn’t work for all fields. It can pay (depending) to send fewer resumes and make sure the cover letter and resume are tailored to the position.

In my experience with my kids the approach 100% depends on the field. One of my kids got their dream job solely on the cover letter they wrote while my other kid got their dream job without even sending a cover letter. First kid in business (applied very strategically) the other abet engineer (shotgunned).

My daughter’s NIH funded interview is still on. I am grateful that none of the other positions are federally funded.

One position just asked for references. :crossed_fingers:t3: She still has a bunch of second interviews :grimacing::grimacing::grimacing:

Update: the NIH funded position said that as of right now they have enough funding to last through the end of 2028. They are looking at other funding sources.

A few others have asked for references.

Over the past few weeks I have learned that hospitals and various facilities are being asked to cut millions and millions of dollars from their budgets. This will trickle down and impact a whole bunch of jobs in health care, industry, and research. This is factual information.

That being said, after several rounds of interviews my kid has 2 offers that are industry funded and she will be deciding between the 2. This is in a very specialized area of health care. She will be employed, at least for now.

This is so sad. Tough time ahead for early career scientists.

Yep, and the research brain drain is getting real.

Cooper, who has four NIH proposals in limbo, recently helped one of her postdoctoral scholars apply for a fellowship in Europe to continue her research.

Robert Schwartz, a college and graduate essay consultant, says that some students he works with are taking a few extra gap years in European laboratories, in the hopes that more US funding will open up in the future.

Crazy how many kids come on the CC (and I know we are not representative) - but wanting PhDs.

It’s amazing how many cancer and AIDs and other crazy diseases - how many survivors there are.

I don’t know how this makes any sense - but all these brilliant kids today - their minds will have to be used in ways that won’t best help society - and they’re all planning a path that may not exist.

Even scarier is kids grow up with I want this, I want that - and then it’s gone - and it’s scary to think this has happened over night - so maybe that “liberal arts” degree is better - so you are prepped to pivot.

Well no one knows but…
