Well, to be honest, which college will say on a tour that their students are struggling to get internships or full time placements, or that students are settling for jobs outside their major?
I would trust published placement stats over anything they say on a tour. And if they don’t publish - well, that speaks for itself too.
Sure, but law schools have been sued in the past over misleading job statistics.
I’m not saying schools are intentionally deceiving students/parents.
I’m interested in learning how schools will navigate a more difficult job environment for their students if the top paying companies scale back hiring.
Interesting you say that - I agree - and yet U Tampa had a parents panel online - and while the parents raved about the school, two parents had graduated (one accounting and one something else) and both said their kids had yet to find something.
I am now a consultant for a leading worldwide company for AI medical charting with ambient listening technology. I have experience in the speech recognition world the last like 25 years (and you all just thought I was just another pretty face ).
It listens to the doctor and patient and makes the medical chart in about 40 seconds. It’s about 98% accurate and after beta testing 5 leading products I went with this company and have been live for about 2 months. Yes, it’s that new.

So if I can get into a company at 63…with no computer programming skills… Lol. These young much smarter kids can find a job lol. From the college threads I am on I coin this “Betting on yourself”… It’s amazing what you can do when you think and approach things out of the box per se.
I was at a tech in higher ed conference yesterday and the theme was AI. The takeaway was “AI isn’t going to replace you, but those that can effectively use AI will.”
DH works at an unsexy tech company. Well, I think it is sexy because it is a creative one, but it isn’t FAANG. He’s worked there for 15 years and loves the RSUs and work-life balance.
The other thing about tech is that all companies are tech companies. Grocery and retail companies (besides Amazon) need engineers. So does the health care industry. So do local governments. Sure, these names aren’t Google, but grads can get their feet wet and launched. And they might prefer the cost of living where non-sexy company is or other perks (my local government dept has its own IT staff and they pay into the pension like me).
Maybe more normalizing that just like a top score isn’t going to land you at Cal needs to transfer to a CS degree is not going to automatically equate to a gig at Google straight away.
I’m just waiting for some of our doctors to take online payments vs a mailed check! I have a feeling it will be a LLLLLONG time before AI reaches my neck of the world.
Just got this at work this AM - I don’t know about doctors or anyone else but we’ll adapt to AI or we’ll be managed out.

First, my big boss has to embrace voicemail and not printing out every email attachment and posting it everywhere, and sending duplicate to all managers via interoffice mail! For our “new” (6 years old) online timekeeping system, he still has us fill out duplicate paper copies of leave slips.

Most businesses are looking at AI solutions now. They will get to know it one way or another. I wouldn’t just study like prompt engineering since there are articles saying that is being phased out and it just really started … I would look into things of interests. Trends tend to be, well, trendy but I think this is here to stay for awhile. As an example my son does Industrial engineering for a global company
They are looking at different AI solutions that might “assist” in what they do. As I told my son…"learn it well and learn how to break it if your job is ever in question "
This is a bit like saying all companies are telecom companies because they use telephones. There are companies that make technology and those that use technology. Not the same.
