Job Prospects for ‘24, ‘25 Grads and beyond?

For sure, we parents are definitely saying that…and it’s true, he’s at a well known company and there will be promotions to be had. He is a really hard worker and did well in the three summer internships he worked. He will also be in a great city, with tons of young people and opportunity.

That’s a formula for success. Also, when you work for a big company as a beginning employee, you’re probably not working 70 hour weeks grinding it out with a bunch of hyper ambitious kids trying to make a name for themselves.

Id much rather have my kids enjoy just being a normal young adult and not think the workforce is the Hunger Games.

Totally agree, and I have made this point to him. His sister is living the Hunger Games and he specifically didn’t want that. He will have a much better quality of life and probably be making more $ on an hourly basis too, lol

This is what we talked to LEO son about. The salary is an important benchmark, but what do you actually make hourly? If you can get compensated for every hour you work that can be very valuable, and is often underestimated.

I dont think most people reflect and think:

“My biggest regret in life? Not working myself to death, 80 hrs/week in a stressful job with unreal demands and no time for friends or family. Id be a lot happier now if I did that at 22.”

Though my family all does know that I got so, so, so tired of hearing the whole “Nobody’s last words are ever ‘I wish I had spent more time at the office’” while I was growing up that if I am ever in a situation where I have warning that my death is imminent and what the timing will be, my last thought (and words, if I can manage it) will be “I wish I had spent more time at the office”, just so that that we can all know that that particular saying will from thenceforth and forever be a lie.

So, update on my son and the offer he received on Monday. He wrote back to the HR manager to ask (1) as he won’t be taking their health insurance, would they consider increasing his salary and (2) could he move his start date two weeks later as he already has some travel planned.

They wrote back on Friday to say no on the salary increase (that’s fine, it would’ve been nice and was worth asking, but certainly not a deal breaker) and yes, they could push his start date, but they needed to figure out an appropriate date because the office would be closed the week that he suggested.

So he wrote back Friday to say thank you, that’s great and he’s happy and excited to join them. Should he accept his offer in the portal or wait until they had a new start date settled.

He thought he had “through Jan 10” to accept the offer, but apparently it was “before Jan 10”. Because when he went to look yesterday - Jan 10 - to see what the HR lady had said, not only had she not replied, but the offer was no longer in his portal with no way to accept it.

Sigh.

So we had a little panic yesterday. He wrote back immediately to make sure they understood that he was accepting, that he was just waiting for guidance on the logistics, and that his email Friday confirmed he was accepting, and he’s so sorry for any confusion and what can he do, he really is excited about joining this company and wants the job.

He should’ve just accepted in the portal Friday night, but he didn’t. Let’s hope he didn’t just accidentally screw himself.

Oh no! Hoping it works ok. It’s the weekend. So he might not hear anything right away, but hopeful it’s clear that he accepted it. Keep us posted and fingers and toes crossed at this end for you.

I can’t imagine he did. If that happens, then likely not a place you’d want to work at anyway.

But they picked him and he was in contact. They don’t want to start again. He’ll be fine clearing it up tomorrow.

Under these circumstances, he is fine. The offer might have been pulled since its invalid in the context of the potential new start date. It might feel excruciating to wait but I don’t think he has anything to worry about.

Accepting the offer as it stood would have been the wrong move, though, because it wouldn’t have reflected the ongoing negotiation.

Yes, so it doesn’t seem like it was totally wrong to not click the accept button. Unfortunately, he’s making the 9 hour drive back to school today, and left this morning around 8:30, so no time to check his email (or if he did check at a lunch or bathroom break, he hasn’t mentioned it to me). So I’m still waiting to hear some resolution for him.

Hopefully he does check / reach out via phone - today - driving or not. He’ll need to stop at rest stops or a McDonalds parking lot, etc.

So good news! During the day today he got a new offer letter - this one generated with a later start date. He went ahead and accepted ASAP in the portal and also sent a follow up email to the HR person helping him to express his thanks to her. So yay! Crisis averted!
