Jodi Arias guilty

I agree. It’s a local-interest news story at most. I don’t get the fascination either. Some plain chick killed her husband. She looked better - though she’s still quite homely – with blonde hair. What else is there?

Nrdsbr, jury was unanimous for 1st degree murder. She was also charged with “felony murder” as a separate charge which the jury also had to deliberate on. Seven of the jurors found her guilty of felony murder as well as 1st degree.

^^^^HarvetstMoon1, yeah, someone cleared that up right after I asked.

Pizzagirl, lol, no she didn’t kill her husband. Seems like lots of people who don’t know why this is such a big story don’t really know much about it. Which is fine, but it’s like saying “I haven’t read the book, but I don’t know why it’s on the best seller list.”

I think the reasons this story is so compelling vary from person to person, but I’m not buying that the salacious nature of the case is only a preoccupation of the media. If people didn’t find the ad nauseum coverage of the sex-related testimony “interesting,” they wouldn’t have kept coming back to watch more and more of it. I think the “sex, lies, and videotape” nature of this case kept it in the headlines whereas your average jealous spurned girlfriend kills ex-boyfriend case might have faded pretty fast. Jodi’s overkill also drew a lot of curious people as well, when put in contrast to the outward presentation of the perpetrator.

CC tends to have a more educated, thoughtful member. But there is certainly a segment of the population whose attention is surely captured by the sex elements of this case. Hence the popularity of some pretty sketchy reality TV shows you think would have zero redeeming value…

Boyfriend, husband, whatever. I’ve wound up seeing bits and pieces of it on CNN when working out and the like, and it’s just so non-interesting that there hasn’t been any reason to follow it.

^^^^But literally millions disagree. So, whether it “should” be a local story only is kind of irrelevant. It is indeed a national story. Plenty of people have found it very compelling, for various reasons.

The fact that he was boyfriend rather than husband is important. If he were the husband, he wouldn’t be dead.

Looks to me like it is going to be life in prison. At least on this round. Wondering how Juan will proceed now - he has put so much into this not sure I see him throwing in the towel.

I’m betting that Juan Martinez does NOT opt for a new jury if this one is undecided since he only gets one more shot. If a second jury is undecided, Jodi gets life meaning she could potentially get out in 20 years. I would think he cuts a deal for life, without the possibility of parole, so he doesn’t have to roll the dice and end up with a lesser life sentence.

^^^^^
Don’t think that Arias will take that deal now.

Hung jury, penalty phase. I’d sure like to know what the split was. Second jury selection begins 7/18 or thereabouts. I’m glad I didn’t bet. I really thought both sides would work out a deal for a “natural life” sentence.

I’m confused. I haven’t been following the trial. What do you mean a new jury?

Why is there a new jury?

Arizona law is weird.

Totally bizarre. How can a new jury decide something of this magnitude without having been present during the trial and hearing all the testimony and evidence?

Can someone explain the fascination with this woman? I had never heard of her until I left my job in April and now every day when I turn on Good Morning America I get several minutes of this soap opera. There are murder trials going on in every state in the country every day. Why this one?

@emily…Clearly the new jury will know the details of the case.

She is young, attractive, lies, cries, made sex pictures, recorded sex conversations, and killed a handsome young man who did not deserve to die at her hand.

When does the movie version come out?

Another minitrial? I feel for Travis’ family having to listen to her trash him again if she testifies. Call me cynical, call me jaded but it won’t shock me if she ends up pregnant while in prison, even if she is on death row…

I can’t really figure it out. I mean, why force two juries to deliberate the death penalty?

It’s a horrendous position to put someone in, to begin with. Jeez

It’s like double jeopardy for death penalty.

I still don’t care, but everytime I see her, I want to change her hair - either cut the bangs shorter or start brushing them to the side. It also looks greasy and in need of a good washing…

It is just inconceivable that this jury could sit through a 6 month trial and not go the final mile and render a verdict. I would have preferred they came back with “life” than have to re-hash this penalty phase. Although I peronally felt the violence involved and her lack of remorse could have warranted death, life is no walk in the park either.
