There are some lessons I thought you had learned, but apparently not.

first, that was an extraordinarily oblique reference, with meaning (intended and actual) only to you and not to the hoi polloi here. second, it is only in keeping with your own recent predilection for examining posters’ history for bits of information to use in ad hominem attacks on their posts - a taste of your own medicine.

What “ad hominem attack” do you have in mind, and how does it justify your own gratuitous slippage from the pledge you made in your PM message to me?

As you know, I have “medicine” I could administer in your case, although I choose not to do so.

I suggest you stick to the issues, and stop acting as a self-appointed tribune…

Byerly–Why don’t you lay off the nastiness about Joey Cheek. I don’t understand why you feel the need to post these comments continually, as if you know intimate details of what he’s thinking and feeling. In some cases, such as your misreading of the NCAA rules as to the ability to keep Olympic bonuses, you have been flat out wrong, and in other cases, such as your recent “he’s making the best of it”, you are obviously just trying to tear down Cheek so as to make Harvard sound better. You seem to have this need to post negative items, or items with rather nasty innuendo, whenever you feel that there is a possibility that someone might prefer a school over Harvard, for whatever reason. As I have said before, although I think that Harvard is a great school, I think that you yourself do not reflect the best of Harvard.

i have in mind, for example, your technique of replying to harvard-critical posts by announcing (after due investigation) that the poster had been deferred there or had even once expressed some admiration for the place. that is classic ad hominem - attacking the messenger rather than the message. also, note that my “pledge” was a conditional one, conditioned on your own good behavior (calling me “typically dishonest” or some such was not what i had in mind). still, i intend to adhere to it. it’s too late to edit my post, however; if you want it deleted, i’m afraid you’ll have to report it to the mods (i don’t believe you enjoy the cozy “arrangement” with them that you enjoy with another site’s mods, or i’d suggest you do it yourself). and now, back to the “issues”…

Mom -

Don’t be silly. It isn’t necessary to “tear down Joey Cheek” to “make Harvard sound better.”

Indeed, I doubt that the reputation of Harvard - or Princeton, for that matter - depends on whether it admitted or didn’t admit Joey Cheek, a fine Olympian.

the crimson checks in on mr. cheek’s current activities:

^^Sounds wonderful. Looks like Joey is the real deal. However, I hope that he doesn’t neglect his studies while he is out doing all these good works. It would be a shame for him to flunk out after all this publicity.
