I think if we stopped having reality programs that pay people millions for their weird stories it might discourage people from trying to hit the lottery by having children in the dozens. It’s irresponsible. I swore never to watch a program featuring the Duggers. Ever.

I trained with a resident whose husband was also a resident, and she ended up with ovarian hyperstimulation and near died from self medication of fertility drugs.

Because the use of gonodotropins is so expensive, and after one is either successful, or gives up, there is also a whole underground of women exchanging gonodotropins. It started out as a great way for a deserving couple to be able to affort treatment. They would go to a support group where there would be women, contacts etc to get HMG products free from patients who had this very expensive stuff sitting unused in their medicine cabinets. However, there are now more than a few reported cases of women self medicating with no hormone levels or U/S’s to monitor.

And then there is the fact that clinics in Mexico, Europe, and India esp are advertising the fact that one can pay for a “vacation” and medical treatment for half of what it would cost here. You probably have seen/heard of some of the plastic surgery nightmares coming out of Mexico. This is happening in the world of infertility as well.

I just caught a few minutes of the Duggar’s show last night, the episode where the oldest son gets married. Meanwhile, the groom’s mother is hugely pregnant. How creepy is THAT?

Whenever Michelle Duggar says that they will have as many children as God sends them, it makes me think of the joke of the people in a flood stranded on their roof. Someone comes in a boat to get them and they refuse to leave, then a helicopter and they still won’t go, and finally they drown. When they get to Heaven, they ask God why He let them die, and He replied, “I sent a boat and a helicopter! What more did you expect?” I personally wonder if God intends for anyone to have 18 children (or 14)?

It’s pretty hard to catch her not pregnant.

I just discovered Jon and Kate this weekend and spent hours watching the episodes I could find on youtube. Every now and then, I suffer from intense empty nest syndrome. (DS is a sophomore in college and DD will graduate from high school next year.) Lately it has been hitting me very hard and I find Jon and Kate strangely comforting! I really do miss having small children around and I love watching their children react to the world!

I watched few times, they are very cute, but I get bored with it and for that matter with the most of TV. It is on while I am busy with something else, that is the only way I can “watch”, more like “listen” to TV. For those who have “empty nest” syndrom, get some new activity in your life, that is the only thing that cured mine. I was afraid of slipping into depression, not any more.

I think that exploiting your children for financial gain is deplorable. You never see Kate hug the children or tell then that she loves them. How many free things can one family accumulate. So sad!

Here’s a great website with more on KON.

[Gosselins Without Pity](http://gosselinswithoutpity.blogspot.com/)

That’s just not true.

I agree… am still watching it, if I catch it when it’s on, and she does indeed, show physical affection to them and tell them that she loves them.

And while I don’t doubt there have been some painful estrangements in the family, and people have their views of Kate, don’t forget that we’re talking about a film crew that spends hours and hours in that house every week, to come up with enough footage for 25 minutes (or less) of TV viewing. We don’t see everything… good or bad.

Yes, we don’t see everything. Not the three nannies or the cleaning crew.

What happened to Aunt Jodie? She was the one constant caring person in the kids lives. The producers offered her money since she was appearing on the show so much. Kate said no way. She said “I’m the only one who’s going to make money off my kids.” There was a blog written by Aunt Jodie’s sister who explained what happened.

Since this is a reality show, there are no limits to the hours the kids can work, and there are no laws to enforce that any payments are made to the children for having their privacy invaded. You can already see the effect that the show is having on Maddy and Cara. There were some live interviews recently with Kate, and Maddy really let her have it on live TV.

I’m all for people making a success of their lives. I just don’t think the 1.3 million mansion they just moved into should have been gotten on the basis of them exploiting their children.

I would love it if at some point they said, “Our house is paid for and each kid has a healthy 529 account. We’ll do an annual update show from now on, but that’s all.”

This has been brought up before on another thread but we really really do need to see “Jon and Kate + 8: Senior Year” - how compulsive Kate handles the college search process for 6 kids at once!

Cara and Maddy have been scarce the last two shows. Maybe they begged off.

thanks to people from the Commonwealth of PA. The Lt Gov. started it and then they solicited donations for it.

missypie - the house may be paid for but there are serious upkeep costs. The taxes alone are well over $10,000/year. Quite hefty for two unemployed parents.
and then there is the private day school tuition, vacations etc.
they can’t possible continue the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed without continuing to exploit the little ones.

I’m assuming Cara and Maddy haven’t been in lately due to being in school during the day, which is why I suggested this show will go away once the other six are in school. When are they going to film?

Hold on to your hats and socks - J&K+8 get a pet. Actually, a puppy. No, make it TWO puppies. OMG.

I’ve heard rumor about the puppies…not sure how long their stay will be…of course, just rumors.

They already got rid of the two German Shepherd puppies. The excuse was that one of the kids was allergic. I imagine it had more to do with Kate’s OCD than an allergy, but the allergy excuse is better PR.

I’ve watched a few episodes of this show. I can’t stand Kate, she just barks out orders at her poor husband. I sincerely pray that my S doesn’t end up with a wife like that.

Looks like the pressure is getting to Jon:
