Toward the very end of his talk Boyer spoke of the need of students to marry the ancient virtues of Courage and Prudence. I liked the choice of the word “marrying” in this context. It suggests something a little subtler than our usual transactional “trade off between…”. The ancients understood that in a fully developed human being these virtues work together to compose a harmonious whole. It sounded like Boyer was suggesting that not only students but university policy should strive for such a harmony.
