John Mulaney on Alumni Donations

I have given to my undergrad university every year since I graduated. And I’m proud to have done so. I give a restricted donation to my underfunded department. I know what my donation can buy them. I just can’t imagine not making this donation.

My kids give a small amount to their schools as well.

We also give a sizable donation to the school where one of our kids got a masters degree…and again…we are happy to be able to do this. Again…underfunded…and well used.

DH gives to his undergrad school as well.

Glad this stand up comic got some laughs but frankly, I don’t applaud NOT giving back…if you can.

I do the same for my kid’s (current) college.

My alma mater is a women’s school that has changed its focus and its benefits for women, so I have no desire to donate, though we do donate to my husband’s alma mater. Since we are putting 2 kids through school in the next 6 years, we will be “donating” to their schools for the foreseeable future. My son is doing a special program that costs $6k a year over and above tuition. We had to think long and hard about sending him there but it gives him the best chance for success. I plan to endow a scholarship (not sure endow is the right word because I will just be giving enough for someone to use it each year, not giving a million dollars that earns interest or anything) once he is gone.

Even if you were full pay you probably didn’t cover the total cost of your education at the school.
