Junior with Atypical Situation (Long)

I disagree. There is a lot of drinking at CMC (like many colleges), but there are plenty of people who don’t drink. And yes there is sub-free housing, and it is the largest, newest, and in most people’s opinion, the nicest dorm on campus. I’ve never seen or heard of any instance in which anyone was pressured to drink. There are plenty of activities and events for the people who do not drink (movies, speakers, the midnight frisbee club, etc.)

If you really “disdain drinking” and can’t stand even being around it, then CMC not be the best place for you. But then just about all nonreligious schools might not be good. . .

As long as the social scene at a school involves non-alcoholic activities, I’ll be okay. On any given Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, I would estimate that 40% or more of the student body at my high school has been drinking. I don’t know how that compares to college but that’s what my school is like now.

I do stand corrected: I just found out that CMC has one sub-free tower dorm and it is indeed nice. I still maintain that it is far from a desirable environment for someone who “disdains” drinking. I know very social, very open-minded non-drinkers who are quite unhappy with CMC’s social scene, including multiple students who have transferred for primarily this reason. One good friend loved the professors, loved the school, but was unhappy having to work so hard to find a social niche among the other colleges (hence my suggestion to tour and stay overnight so that you can really evaluate what role the social scene will play in your overall opinion).

Thanks, theboneyking, for the correction. Best of luck, again!

I just wanted to update this thread and possibly get a few more opinions. I retook the SAT in March (threw up 6 times during the test) and raised my score to 780m, 760cr, 720wr (1540/2260). Since my original post, I have visited Davidson and UNC-Asheville. Davidson was enjoyable though not breath-taking and UNC-A will be a good safety school for me.

My principal also got a waiver in place for me to become more involved in ECs. I inherited the ultimate frisbee club (now president) and I’ve founded a Foreign Film Club with a friend.

Back to the original questions though, I am still searching for schools that will actively engage me about my situation prior to my application. I have contacted Grinnell, Carleton, and Davidson to lackluster responses, mostly saying my contacts will talk to folks who are in a better situation to respond. These questions being about medical housing, sub-free housing, course scheduling, social scene, etc…but thorough responses haven’t been made yet. Hopefully with the April notify deadlines passing, I can get more information.

My goals have changed slightly, as I am now more interested in attending law school after graduation. I’m interested in schools with strong social science (economics and political science/public policy especially) backgrounds.

My list has changed, so if those of you who were kind enough to provide insights the first time around would do the same, I’d appreciate it.

Reach: Davidson, Carleton, Haverford
Match: Whitman, Kenyon, Oberlin, UNC-CH (In state)
Safety: New College of Florida, UNC-A (In state)

I am not making my decision based on feeder percentages or prestige, so off the wall suggestions are totally welcome. I am especially interested in any community opinion on NCF, as their independent focus and my independent history may be a good match.

I apologize if rekindling such an old thread is problematic but the advice the first time around was very helpful and I hope for similar results.

I take care of many patients with cyclic vomiting syndrome. With cyclic vomiting, make sure you have good access to health care at your chosen college(Er w/ IV fluids etc and folks that understand the condition nearby). Make sure you are a good program of maintenance medications with additional medication to stop a cycle when one starts–as you well know, if that does not work access to a good ER is key

CVS is still pretty unusual so I would higly recommend being near a major medical center

My condition is not the typical CVS or the typical abdominal migraine. While your concern is justified and appreciated, such measures aren’t as imperative for me as they would be for others. I have not had to be hospitalized for dehydration or for the administration of medications (except once, 3 years ago). Thank you though. My condition is at a point where I can manage it without such precautions.

I think you are so cool. You throw up six times during the SAT’s…and do waaaaay better than me.

congrats! and good luck!

If you are looking for another safety, Id recommend UofA. They are fairly large, but have great personal attention to students with special needs.

Ninja, have you considered Elon? I would think it would be a safety with your SAT scores. I don’t know anything about their economic and polysci depts, but the environment is nurturing, they have a law school, some great new facilities and its location would keep you somewhat close to home.

I have thought about Elon but the students I have spoken to there have given me the impression that it isn’t a good fit. I feel comfortable with my safeties at this point, in terms of environment, location, and cost. Thank you for your suggestion.
