just want to get a sense of mudders' ability

Yeah, there’s a girl who’s a gymnast in our school, although not Olympic level but definitely competitive level. (Like national)
And she’s really smart and has one of the highest GPA (and our school is a private college prep school) She can’t sleep much though because of that.

And on top of that, she’s really social and attractive. She literally has it all.

geekmom, where did you find this?

It was part of a page the Admissions Office published on last year’s “admitted students welcome site.” The page included other stats – test scores, class rank, ethnicities, locations, all that sort of stuff. I dug it up from email that geek_son shared with me.

I won’t publish the URL here since it’s not public, but I’m sure you guys will get a similar page on your “admitted students” site. Watch your email when the RD decisions go out.

BTW, I believe it was written about the admitted 13ers, which of course is a larger pool than the matriculated 13ers.

I also disagree with using test scores to measure students worth. However, if you insist on using math tests to measure the abilities of Mudders you may as well use the college/university versions.

MCM/ICM - Mathematical Modeling. Note that Mudd is the only undergraduate institution of the 9 teams with an outstanding score (out of 1675 teams participating)
[The Mathematical Contest in Modeling](http://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/mcm/contests/2009/results/)

Putnam - Basically the university version of the USAMO and stuff, from what I hear. At the very least, its official website is grouped together with AMC/AIME/USAMO, and the same kind of people who did that stuff in high school are the ones who are crazy enough to give up a Saturday to take it now.
[HMC Has Another Strong Showing at Putnam Competition](http://www.hmc.edu/newsandevents/putnam09.html)

The class of 2014 didn’t get an awesome letter for our admitted class profile. :frowning:
But we did get the same intro…
and then some stats…

Blackroses, they’ll probably talk about it at ASW and frosh orientation. From the sound of it, they’re very pleased with this year’s admits. :)

Sorry to change the topic back to those tests… as an Asian female living in Chico, I don’t get opportunities like that (Acadeca state competition and 1 CB award). I have never heard of these tests and did not hear about them until I became more active on CC. I hope that they are really irrelevant to academic life at Mudd, but I also look up to people who have taken them and gotten great scores.

I will follow this thread closely… I plan to talk to some professors about the expected math abilities when I visit Mudd next month. I do feel I’m slightly disadvantaged in that sense, a little intimidated by the great people who will become my classmates, but mostly very excited.

Completely irrelevant. Dont worry

To follow up on Miru’s post, if you go back a year on the Putnam from when s/he did, you’ll see something even more impressive:

[The Mathematical Contest in Modeling](http://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/mcm/contests/2008/results/)

There were 12 papers worldwide that were chosen as outstanding papers, and Harvey Mudd had 4 of them. And this was out of (I believe) 7 teams. And the three teams who didn’t get Outstanding all did very well (2 meritorious and 1 honorable mention, if I recall correctly). Given that it’s not like these people do any special training or took classes to get ready for this, it was a pretty impressive performance.

minz: Don’t worry about it. I came in with a better background than a lot of people (Calc BC in junior year, Multi-V in senior year), which allowed me to skip out of a few classes. However, in the classes that I didn’t skip out of, I was completely pwned by people who only took Calc AB, and not until their senior year. Everyone who’s been accepted to Mudd is super smart (this means you!), and the stuff here is challenging enough that the differences in HS education often end up being negligible. Though Mudders have generally heard of the AMC and other math contests, I don’t think most people took them.

Re:gsaitoh
Dang! That’s insane! I’m not surprised that we stole so many of the discrete solutions, especially since a couple of the teams had math/cs majors on there (The Mudd teams with a CS major on them have done quite well in the past). Unfortunately, none of the teams got an Outstanding designation this year :(. We still did have a finalist though, and there were quite a few freshman who successfully completed the competition (a team with a senior and two freshman made it to “meritorious”, so there is definitely hope).

Putnam results were fairly good this year. Our team did fairly well, and Palmer (a sophomore) managed to pull of a 12th place score, so that’s pretty awesome.
