Kennedy assassination--your stories, thoughts

SO MANY COPS in downtown Dallas today. I always say that Dallas weather misbehaves for company (e.g. the Superbowl/“Icebowl” a few years ago.) Last night it was 81 degrees, this morning around 33.

Accidentally posted this on the conspiracy thread:

Lots of coverage in Dallas going on. Yesterday our temps were in the 70’s and felt warmer due to the humidity (it was almost 90 degrees on Sunday). A cold front came in last night and now we are in the 30’s with wind chills in the 20’s and rain/sleet forecast for the day. So I wonder what kind of turnout they will get for the ceremonies in Dealey Plaza later today. I understand that a few eyewitnesses had planned to attend, but I don’t know that this weather would be good for a very elderly individual.

07Dad, the new house we bought and moved into last spring was lacking gas logs in the fireplace (owner took his logs with him). Just by chance I had purchased some new ones and scheduled delivery for this morning. Good timing.

No kidding. Nasty weather for Dallas.

LOL We have a family of three cats. They demand that we turn on the gas logs the minute that it gets cold at floor level. They will circle the front of the fireplace until we turn it on.

Not all people who were present in Dealey Plaza 50 years are “very elderly” now. (I was not there; I was in San Antonio. I was a teenager at the time, and I consider myself only “moderately elderly.” )

^^^^^LOL. My apologies. :o

“We can’t accept very comfortably that two nobodies, two nothings - Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby - were able to change the course of world history.”

In the fifty years since that awful day I had never shed a tear over it until today.

Watching speeches he gave, hearing his inaugural address, reading about him…all with Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No 2 in the my head. Hard to be unmoved.

America did lose something that day – it lost the promise we still believed, that youthful promise in each of us which was so coldly and brutally extinquised – and an entire generation has not been the same ever since.

"…for whom the bell tolls…" --indeed

God grant we be better people and see if perhaps that flame of promise can be re-lit.

The eternal flame by his grave reminds us of that possibility.

…I’ll bump this once more…Good night everybody.

Although I don’t want to say anything negative on the 50th anniversary of his tragic death, the whole camelot myth was concocted by a very effective publicity effort by Kennedy loyalists. The reality of JFK was far different than the sentimental memories of someone who has become a caricature of all the unfilled hopes and dreams of many Americans.

Because I lived through his administration and was a news junkie even at a young age, I know that Kennedy, the man and the politician, is far different than the image we have created for him.
