<p>I’m on the verge of getting the basic Kindle since I just want an ereader to have when on trips. We’ll be away for a couple of months with a laptop and my I-touch so I want to avoid packing stacks of paperbacks. I never buy books; always just check them out from librairies.</p>
<p>So - what is free to read on a Kindle, and would any of the other e-readers give a better choice? I already know about:</p>

Library loans (my local library does have them)</p>
<p>What about magazines and subscriptions? Are they all pay, or are there free ones (especially if you have subscriptions to the print editions)?</p>
<p>You don’t need a Kindle to review what is available for Kindle. Just go on Amazon and select the Kindle ebooks from Kindle drop down… There is the list of top 100 free and ways to search by listing from lowest $ to highest. Not aware of free magazines, but you do get a free 2 weeks trial.</p>
<p>Apparently since I have a print subscription to New Yorker, I can get the online version free - not sure if that applies to Kindle.</p>
<p>However - stopped by Staples and tried one out - I don’t really like the background color or the contrast. I did find how to change the font and font size, but don’t think there’s any way to adjust that light greyish-green background to something a little whiter, so that could be a deal breaker for me.</p>
